We live in Messologgi. It is in Western Greece and it belongs to the municipality of Etoloakarnania. It's population is about 13.000.It has great history, in fact there have been five prime ministers and famous poets who lived here in the past. A very famous Greek poet, Kostis Palamas, spent his childhood in our city. Also there was a big revolution against the Ottomans in 1826. After that it was named Sacred City of Messologgi. Here you can visit the Garden of Heroes, the Art and History Museum, the archaeological museum and the salt museum. You can take a walk or ride your bike by the sea ,go birdwatching, go sailing and go canoeing or
kayaking. Some local products are: fish roe which comes from the fish bafa and it is covered with wax. Also fish like kefalos, gastros, eel and thinlip mullet. Other products are salt, ouzo, olives, honey and more. There is a lagoon with different types of rare birds and a big port with a lot of boats. Messologgi is beautiful but in the last few years we have a lot of thunderstorms and floods.

Mesologgi is situated in a beautiful lagoon. A lot of rare birds nest here. You can see flamingos, pelicans, storks, wild ducks. Lots of people go birdwatching at the lagoon.

The traditional festival of Saint Simeon is a custom with historical, religious and musical dimension. It is one of the biggest festivals in the city of Mesologgi and took its name from the monastery of saint Simeon which is near the city and was built in 1740.
The festival has its roots back in the era during which Greece was part of the Ottoman empire. The people of the town gathered on the day of the Pentecost , usually in June, and attended the Church Service the next morning on Monday , which is a day dedicated to the Holy Ghost. Then they celebrated by dancing.
Main participants of the festival are the men dressed in traditional costumes. Some of them (the ''armatomenoi'') wear the ''doulamas'' and carry weapons that date back to the 19th century and some others ( the ''kavalarei'') ride their horses. Every group of men has their own band , called ''zigia'' that plays traditional music.
The leader of each group is the captain. The musicians first go to the leader's house to
pick him up and they all head to the Garden of Heroes , a place that is dedicated to the heroic exit of the people in the besieged Mesologgi back on April 26, 1826. After they gather there they all head together to the monastery where they will celebrate all night and attend church the following morning.
During the celebrations at night the participants dance many traditional dances and particularly the ''dance of the dead man''. During this dance two of the warriors fight with each other and one of them gets killed. Then, the other who feels sorry for what he has just done starts dancing and praying to Saint - Simeon. The saint performs his miracle and the dead man comes back to life. This dance celebrates forgiveness and friendship.
Some facts about the Exit: Mesologgi was besieged twice by the Ottomans ( April 1825-October 1825 and December 1825-April 1826). The people refused to surrender and suffered from illnesses and lack of food . They decided to exit the city walls and die free. This event was one of the most important ones in the Greek Revolution.

This costume (doulamas) is worn by the men dressed as warriors , called Ai-Simiotes, in reminder of the warriors who ran towards the Saint Simeon monastery in order to seek shelter after the heroic exit from the besieged city of Mesologgi and the battle against the Ottomans. Some warriors and citizens that survived and escaped the exit , stayed hidden at the monastery. But the enemy found them and very few of them managed to escape.

Every year on Lazarus Saturday and on Palm Sunday ,exactly a week before the Orthodox Easter Sunday, people in our city celebrate the heroic exit of 1826. Thousands of people from all over Greece come and join the parade wearing traditional costumes. At night, they gather at the Garden of Heroes and perform a ceremony that reenacts the burning of the gunpowder keg by Christos Kapsalis. Kapsalis and some people unable to fight, decided to end their lives this way and not surrender to the enemy.

Hello from Ikaria, Greece!
We are the students of the 6th grade of the 2nd Primary School of Agios Kirykos.
We are about to present our place to you!
Nice to meet you everyone!

Hello from Ikaria!

Living in Ikaria is great! The island is located in the Eastern Aegean Sea and both the natural landscape and the beaches are amazing. Ikaria island is an alternative destination, famous for the longevity and stress-free everyday life of its islanders as well as for the epic traditional feasts and the locally made wine.

The Island of Longevity...
Ikaria is included in the so-called "blue zone", that is, it is one of the corners of our planet where people live longer and in better health compared to the local and global average.
Research has shown that the secrets of longevity on our island are the Mediterranean diet (olive oil, red wine, organic vegetables, local honey, goat's milk). Also, the strong social ties between the residents combined with the "stress-free" everyday life play an important role.

In Ikaria, religious holidays are accompanied by festivals, which are part of the Ikarians' tradition and culture.
Locals, as well as many visitors, have fun dancing to live traditional music, eating rasko (goat) and drinking local wine. In the famous festivals of Ikaria, people party and dance all day long.

Students of the 4th Grade of Derveni Primary School present their town and their school!

My town is called Derveni. It is a small coastal town but there are some mountains near it.
There are many old and new houses on the main road. There are two hotels, one near the beach and one in the mountain above the town. There are two big churches. There are two small playgrounds near the square.
There are many shops in Derveni. These shops are on the main road the one opposite the other. When you walk from school towards the center of Derveni you can see a bakery and a café. In total there are five cafés. Some are near the beach and some are on the main street. There is a butcher's next to the bike shop and there is a big supermarket next to the toyshop. There is, also, a small bookshop and three restaurants. One of them sells "souvlaki", a traditional Greek dish.
You can do many things in Derveni in summer but not so many in winter. Children can participate in sport activities, as there is a dance and a Martial Arts school. Unfortunately, there isn't a museum in Derveni but there is an open-air cinema for the summer.

My school is small but beautiful. It is in Derveni opposite the main square.
There are two school buildings and one playground in the middle. In the main building there are many classrooms that we use in the morning. The other building is much older and we use it for the extended program or the school events.
You can see many things around my school. Apart from the large playground, there are many flowers and trees. There is a basketball court and a football field next to our school.
In my school there is one music room and one computer room. There are nine classrooms and the teacher's room.

Students of the 6th Grade of Derveni Primary School present the villages where they live.
Derveni is a village in Greece. Specifically in the Pelloponese and it is in the regional unit of Corinthia. It is located near the sea and the weather is usually sunny, but sometimes is a little cold. In the summer the temprature is high. In the winter the temprature drops.
The people who live in Derveni work as fishermen and some of them are farmers. Others own bakeries or resturants and cafes. The people in Derveni are friendly and they will help you if you need something.
In their free time the people go for a walk or go cycling by the mile-long coast. There are a lot of places you can visit in Derveni such as the main square, the many shops and the big church of Saint John. And these are some things about Derveni.

If you ever find yourself in Greece and you want to know how you can come to our village, have a look at our suggestions.

We live in Rozena, which belongs to the regional unit of Corinthia. Rozena is a small mountainous village in the Peloponnese. Rozena is near Derveni.
In this area the weather is always sunny in summer. But in winter the temperature usually drops and it often rains heavily.
People of Rozena work in agriculture and they are mostly farmers. In their free time they go cycling by the mile-long coast or they go walking in the forest.
There are fantastic places for visitors in Rozena. You can visit the church Ypapanti and the bakery “Dentrinelis”. There you can eat delicacies or you can eat delicious meat in the local tavern.
Lygia is a coastal village in the in regional unit of Corinthias and in the Peloponnese, the weather in the winter is very cold and rains heavily but in the summer it is the exact opposite.
People in Lygia usually work as farmers and fishermen. People in their free time often they drink café and walk, go shopping, go cycling by the mile-long coast, watch TV and chill on their bed watching videos or movies. The people in Lygia are nice and kind.
There are not many places of interest that you can visit in Lygia. Actually, the only place is “Kostantina’s Fish tavern”. And these are some things about our place, Lygia.
Petalou is in the Peloponnese and it is in the regional unit of Corinthia. It is located near the mountains. The temperature in winter drops, in the summer the weather is warm and sunny.
People work as farmers, fishermen and some of them are own bakeries. Other women are housewives. In their free time people go for swimming in the summer and go for cycling and walking by the sea in winter.
There are many places you can visit in Petalou, such as the church of “Agios Antreas”, the beautiful hotel and the main square.

Here are some photos from Petalou taken by the students

THE FIRST PRIMARY SCHOOL IN
MAGLAJ
BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA -students present their place.

Hello,we are the students of the 4th and 7th grade in "The First primary school" in Maglaj.
We are looking forward to making a great project together!

Maglaj is located in the northern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is a small but beautiful town on the bank of river Bosna.
The seventh graders present our city

Maglaj, like numerous other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has an old part of the town with mosques, traditional houses dating back from the Ottoman Empire, and a fortress that stands as a symbol of Maglaj. The new part of Maglaj, situated on the west side of the river Bosna, is made up of modern architecture that was started in the 1950s, and has become massively developed until 1991 and today.
In 2014 there was a terrible flood. All the city and sourrounding villages were under water.
The first floor of our schoool was under water and everything was destroyed.
It took some time to clean everything and to repair everything. However, now everything looks even better than before including our school. Europen Union and many people around the world helped in the recovery of the city, its people, restoring buildings, hospitals and schools.

Here we are -the seventh graders who participated in the project: Ilda, Emma, Emina, Hana, Arduana, Sara, Aldin, Anes and Tarik.

Here is the QR code for the link in which our friends -the eigth graders presented our school.Hope you enjoy it!

Scan me!
Here is another link- students from the eigth grade made a short video about our city and its beautiful fort above the city (where "the Dragon" lived -as we described it in the google document). And you can hear a famous song about our city Maglaj ("Kiše nad Maglajem" or in English "Rains upon Maglaj").

Thank you , we hope you learned a lot about us. We are happy to learn a lot of things about you and your countries and cultures!

CHAPTER TWO:
MY LOCAL RECIPES
& LOCAL PRODUCTS
Grade 4 of Derveni Primary School presents two recipes based on local products. The first one is a traditional bean soup with the local beans called "Rodina" and the other one is jam using a local Corinthian raisin.

Apart from the Corinthian raisins, farmers here grow white and red grapes in order to produce wine.
It is, actually one of our popular products. "Roditis" is the most well-known, local, wine variety. You can only find it here in our area.
During the Skills Lab school subject, 2nd and 4th graders of Derveni Primary School visited a winery to learn about the wine-making process.

We have prepared a PowerPoint presentation & a video to show you some of what we learned during our school visit.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES GROWN IN OUR AREA
In Maglaj we grow a lot of healthy fruit and vegetables.
People here usually live in houses or they have vacation houses with big gardens and orchards.
Vegetables are very common and people usually grow onion, potatoes, cucumbers and the most common vegetable is tomato.
We have a lot of different types of tomatoes like
,,Jabučar", ,,Šljivar", ,,Volovsko srce" and many more.
We also have a lot of fruit.
In fall the most common fruit is quince.
But in summer our gardens are full of apples, pears, plumps and nowdays very popular are raspberries, blackberries and cherries.
The most popular apples are called Šarenika, Dobrić, Divljaka and here are many plumps like Mađarica and Valjevka which are all grown for hundreds of years in our area.
Delicious traditional jams are made using this fruit especially plum jam and apple jam as well as apple sweet called "pekmez". Yuummyyy

LOCAL IKARIAN PRODUCTS
The students of the 2nd Grade of Agios Kyrikos primary school drew and painted local traditional Ikarian products, like Ikarian wine, Ikarian honey, Ikarian vanilla, Ikarian oil, ikarian spoon sweets (walnut, lemon, cherry and sour cherry) and jams (raspberry and cherry).
A collage of traditional Ikarian products (wine, honey, vanilla, oregano and frumenty) made by students of the 2nd grade.
Ikarian oregano
The Ikarian oregano has been added to the list of cultivated plant species. It is a medicinal aromatic plant that is inextricably linked to the eating habits of the inhabitants and to their longevity.
Anamma: a kind of Ikarian honey
The Ikarian anamma, a kind of honey, belongs to the PPO (Products of Protected Name/Origin) and PGI (Products of Protected Geographical Indication) having rich nutritional value, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties.
Luscious Wine
The Ikarian wine, or luscious wine, is a red, dry and high temperature wine, known since antiquity.
In fact, it is also mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey as Odysseus got the Cyclops Polyphemus drunk with Ikarian wine, so that he could succeed in getting him blind.
Ikarian jams and spoon sweets
Ikarian jams and spoon sweets are prepared either by housewives at home for private consumption or by local laboratories and local cooperatives for sale. Always local, pure fruits are used. All you need are fresh fruits, sugar and water.
The Students of 2nd and 6th Grade visited a small local factory of traditional Ikarian candies (loukoumia). They took part in the process of making loukoumia and in their packaging.
