CONTOS DE FUCHILE
HOUSEHOLD TALES
CONTOS DE FUCHILE
HOUSEHOLD TALES
Contos de fochile - household tales - with this sweet name that evokes all the warm serenity of long family evenings spent by the paternal fireplace, we call the fairy tales, legends and all the imaginary stories, lost in the haze of past eras.
Here I will say quickly that Sardinia, legendary and mysterious land that it is, is full of legends. Every rural church, every castle ruin or cloister, every village, every region of the island, every cave, every cliff, every mountain, every moor has its legend.
CONTOS DE FUCHILE
HOUSEHOLD TALES
Sometimes legends and fairy tales blend together (...) mixing up fantasy with long gone memories of Nordic legends and epic Flemish and German fairy tales. But most of these tales have local meanings that clearly define their personality. They disclose historic characters who meet devils, fairies, witches and "janas"...
I TRE FRATELLI
THE THREE BROTHERS
On the mountain range of Nurri, and precisely on a mountain called Pala Perdixi or also Corongius, there is a natural, very wide and interesting cave, where the farmers and shepherds take shelter to rest and sometimes to spend the night. Once, three good resident brothers of the village, tired after picking olives all day, went into that cave in the evening to rest. While they were speaking of country matters and they were having dinner on bread and cold cuts, they saw three women enter the cave: they stopped doubtfully at the entrance, and watched the brothers with suspicion.
But they soon, as good boys as they were, invited them politely to come in and take part in their dinner. The women accepted. Once they finished the meal, after many useless thinkings, they asked the three workers who they were.
"We are three orphan brothers" they answered with grace" and we work to live. We are so poor that if we knew how to improve our conditions we would certainly do it with pleasure".
The three women, who were three witches (orgianas) or better three fairies, at first consulted with each other with a look; then they seemed to do something together, with a strange language that sounded like a meow.
Then the oldest took a tablecloth from her pocket and gave it to the eldest of the brothers saying:
«Good young man, take this gift that I am giving you as a true friend. Whenever you want to eat, (you, your brothers and all the company), you will only have to shake this tablecloth three times, then lay it where you want. And every God's gift will appear on it ».
The second fairy turned to the second brother and offered him a wallet saying:
“And you take this. Every time you open it you will find all the money you wish». In the meantime, the youngest fairy handed a pipe (sas leoneddas) to the third brother, with these words: «This wind instrument that I give you, will be useful not only for you, but for all those who will play and hear it. Go, dear child, I have nothing better, but you will see that this humble gift will offer you a greater service than the tablecloth and wallet will offer your brothers ».
After all this, the young men and the three fairies took their leave amiably, thanking each other and saying the ritual "teneis'accontu (keep well)" typical of the southern Sardinians. The three young men, owners of those marvelous talismans, no longer needing a job, began to travel to the cities of the island in search of adventures and pleasures. Everywhere they went, they left traces of charity and generosity - good-hearted young people as they were - but one day a powerful and overpowering priest ordered them to stop using their talismans, under penalty of excommunication and prison.
Here (let me digress) the legend is unclear, but this tale is a fuzzy memory of the inquisition introduced in Sardinia around the XV century, but carried out even earlier by some monks, and imported from Spain.
The three brothers laughed at the priest's order.
The talismans were invisible to all except their owners: so they didn't have to fear. At the repeated threats of the priest, the youngest of the brothers began to play the fife, that had the spell to make dance, with its music, the people who heard it, except the three brothers.
And here is the priest who, against his will, began to dance with a ridiculous and irrepressible momentum. Many people rushed; but as they approached and distinctly heard the magical sound, everybody danced and they couldn't stop. Soon the street was full of people who looked crazy, who jumped fidgeting, writhing and asking the mysterious player for mercy.
But the young man enjoyed watching the priest dance, who, fat and round, suffered more than the others in that infernal dance, and he didn't stop until he was so exhausted that he passed out. After all this, the three brothers fled but they were soon caught, tied up and thrown into the bottom of a tower.
But even there, they enjoyed playing and eating together with the other prisoners and the keepers of the tower.
Therefore their trial was soon arranged and, sentenced to death, after a few days they were sent to the gallows.
A lot of people, even from distant countries, gathered around to enjoy the spectacle of the hanging of the three wizards. On the verge of dying, the three convicts, asked the magistrates to grant them a pardon. And, since the convicts are never denied a pardon, except their life, the three brothers had what they asked for.
The first asked to offer a lunch to all people including the judge.
The proposal was approved with enthusiasm by the people, and immediately the youngest laid his tablecloth on the platform. On the table there was all sort of food, fruit, wine and desserts.
The people ate and drank but the more they ate, the more the food appeared on the table. In short everybody, the henchmen, the oppressors and the magistrates were full and drunk.
Then the second brother asked permission to give money away, and of course his request was accepted! Just as he opened the enchanted wallet he gave away coins and bills of exchange (since modern notes didn't exist yet) to all poor soldiers, farmers and shepherds who never before had seen such a wonder.
While everybody gave in to the crazy glee, - as we all would have done, writer and readers, despite our noble disdain against money -, the third brother asked permission to play music.
Hoping for something good to happen, the judge and the people accepted this last request loudly. The youth, standing on the lethal platform, immediately started to play music and all the drunk crowd, the judges, the soldiers and the oppressors started a furious and morbid dance pushing, beating and hitting each other. Of those who fell on the ground someone fainted, someone was wounded and someone even died. And in terrible confusion the three convicts could escape with their talismans and save themselves.
