Carl: Hiya ladies and gents! Welcome to 

the game show known as The Layers of Knowledge! 

Today we have Serena and Blair as our guest players. I 

will be

testing their knowledge on Earth's layers; every time 

they guess right they will get an unique prize. Who's 

ready to watch this go down?

Crowd: AHHHH! LET'S GO! WE'RE READY! SCIENCE! 

YEAH!

Carl: First question goes to Serena..How thick is each 

layer of the Earth?

Serena: Uhm, wow ok..the inner core is 800 miles, 

outer 1,400 miles, mantle 1,800 miles, crust is 3-5 

miles thick under water but 25 miles thick under 

continents. Plus the lithosphere is 80 km located in the 

crust and upper mantle. The asthenosphere is 180 km 

thick. 

Carl: Great job! You win a magic carpet for that one!

Carl: Next question for Blair...What materials make up 

the outer and inner core and the crust?

Blair: I know this one! The inner core has heavy 

materials like nickel and iron, the outer core has iron, 

sulfur, oyxgen, and molten, but the crust has lighter 

materials like basalts and granites but also made up of 

potassium, calcium, sodium, silicon, and aluminum. Oh 

yeah!

Carl: Congrats! You've won a box of fairy dust!

Carl: Serena can you tell me whether the density 

of each layer is increasing or decreasing?

Serena: Sure thing, the farther you go into the 

Earth the density increases. 

Carl: That is correct! You have won a blow fish!

Serena: Wow! I always dreamed of having my own 

blow fish!

Carl: So Blair, what is each layer made up of, 

besides the crust and the core this time...?

Blair: I can do this! The mantle consists of steel. 

The lithosphere consists of materials from the 

upper mantle and the crust. The asthenosphere 

consists of deformable rocks.

Carl: Wrongo! The mantle consists of iron, 

magnesium, aluminum, silicon, oxygen, and silcate 

and magma. Sorry, you only get a puzzle piece.

Carl: Ok Serena now i need you to tell me whether 

the temperature increases or decreases, let's see 

what you got.

Serena: Oh good golly that's a toughy! I believe 

the farther you go into the Earth, the hotter the 

temperature gets.

Carl: Oh boy are you a smart one! You've won a 

sombrero. 

Carl: Ok last question, can you tell me whether the pressure 

of each layer is increasing or decreasing?

Blair: I'm not sure if I'm right but I'll take a shot.

Carl: Go ahead, we don't really care let's just keep it rolling, 

alright?

Blair: Ooookay, anywaythe farther you go in the higher the 

pressure gets and in the crust rocks build up pressure but 

then it eventually breaks causing an earthquake and then 

builds up again.

Carl: OMG, fantastic! For that you've won a jeep!

Carl: Now before we announce a winner, let's 

present a slide show of pictures about everything
