In ancient Greece, people believed in gods and goddesses. These
gods and goddesses were powerful and were the reason anything
and everything ever happened. They worshiped them and showed
respect to them, praying that their crops won’t die or their family
will not grow ill. All of them had an important role to play.
Greek gods and goddesses
Zeus
Zeus was the highest god, the god of the gods. He was also god of
lightning and thunder and the most feared god. Zeus, son of Cronus,
was the child that was saved from being swallowed by his father.
Cronus swallowed every child his wife Rhea bared because he was told
that one day one of his children would overpower him and defeat him.
Instead of Rhea giving her son to him, she gave Cronus a rock
wrapped in a blanket and he swallowed everything all together.
When Zeus had grown, he and his mother Rhea gave Cronus a drink
that made him throw up all of the children that had been swallowed
and even the rock. The ones that were swallowed were so grateful
they made him the ruler of the gods.

Gaia

Gaia was the goddess of earth. She created every waterfall, every
mountain, and every living thing on earth. She loved everything she
created, but she was very lonely. One day, while staring up at the
stars, she saw another god named Uranus, god of the sky. The two fell
deeply in love with each other. Later Gaia gave birth to hideous
creatures, and Uranus imprisoned them in Tartarus, deep within the
earth. For revenge of imprisoning her children, she gave one of them a
sickle, telling him to go and defeat his father, and so he did.

Hades
Hades was god of death. He never left his gloomy realm and ruled
with his beautiful wife, Persephone. He captured his wife through
violent and forced methods. For a point in time, he fought a war with
the other gods and goddesses called the Titanomachy. The war lasted
for almost ten years, ending with the victory of the other gods and
goddesses

HeraHera was the queen of all the gods, and also the goddess of marriage.
She was Zeus's sister. She was also his wife. The gods did things like
that.
Hera and Zeus had two children, Ares and Hephaestus. Zeus also had
children with other mothers, children like Hermes and Apollo and
Artemis and Hercules. Hera did not like that. She was very jealous.
She was often mean to Zeus's other children. Some, like Hercules,
she even tried to kill.

HermesHermes was the messenger of the gods. He was also the deal maker.
Hermes was Zeus' youngest son. Hermes mother was Maia. Hermes
only had one daughter. But he had a pile of sons, one of whom was
Pan.

AresAres was the god of war. He was true royalty as far as the gods were
concerned. His parents were the king and queen of the ancient Greek
god.Ares was tall. He was handsome. He was mean. He was self-
centered. Nobody liked him much. Ares best friend was Eris, the spirit
of disagreement. The two often traveled together, and they often
brought other spirits with them. Those spirits usually included the
spirits of Pain, Panic, and Famine.

ApolloApollo was the son of Zeus, king of all the gods. His mother was the
gentle Leto. Apollo had a twin sister, Artemis. Apollo had lots of jobs in
the ancient Greek god world. One of them was to bring up the sun.
Another was to watch over music and musicians. Apollo was a gentle
god. But he could lose his temper if provoked enough. When he did,
Apollo always got even in very clever ways.
