When I am older I want to
be a vet. I'd be doing what
I love- helping animals.

Being a veterinarian is a big
responsibility, a animal's life depending
on you. For me, I want to be a
domestic animal vet, for example, dogs
and cats.

Vets also use lots of equipment on a
daily basis. They can use x-rays,
scalpels, stethoscopes, thermometers,
syringes, scales, computers, ultrasound,
needles, thread, anesthesia machine,
medication, animal food, things to treat
the wounds with, surgical instruments,
diagnostic equipment, and radiographic
equipment. But they can use more.

Earning a doctor of veterinary medicine
degree typically takes four years. You
don't need a bachelor degree to gain
acceptance to a veterinary medicine
school, but you'll get a better chance of
getting accepted into the school.
Students typically study animal
physiology and anatomy, biology,
zoology, animal science, chemistry and
microbiology.

Every state in the U.S. requires licensing
of veterinarians.The requirements vary
by state but all require graduation from
an accredited college. The must
graduate from veterinary medicine and a
passing grade on the national test,
called the North American Veterinary
Licensing Exam. Once you get your
veterinarian license, you can begin your
practice immediately. In total, 8 years of
school is required!

Veterinarians usually work lots of hours
every week. The hours could be around
50 or more. You need lots of dedication
and time and patience!

The physical environment for a veterinarian
is a very noisy place, inside a doctors office
and room filled with animals.

There are risks of injury, probably from
getting bitten from a animal or maybe
hurting yourself on the equipment.

Most small animal veterinarians will either
wear business casual (polos and slacks)
or scrubs, each plus or minus a white lab
coat.

Veterinarians can go to many places, they
might travel to zoos or farms to take care
of the animals there. But if you work in the
clinics, you don't go anywhere.
