Gandhi is Thrown off a Train
Gandhi was a lawyer who had studied law in London. In 1893, Gandhi was traveling from London to India carrying a first-class ticket but was kicked off the train for being a man of color.
This horrific experience marked the first time Gandhi experienced racism and believed it was unfair for a person to degrade another just for the color if his or her skin.

Burning the Passes
When the British took control of India, any person of color was supplied a government pass which was a form of segregation. In response, many people burned their passes. This angered the British police because they were essentially burning governmental property. A brave man, Gandhi continued to burn passes despite knowing what the consequences would be. By destroying the passes, this event marked a change in the unfair laws.

Poverty in India
Born to a family of money, Gandhi was unaware of the circumstances the lower-class Indian people were living in. He created an Ashram and lived in it to get a first-hand feel at what it was like for a poor citizen to live in such a state of disarray.
Although many Indian cities were poor, they grew indigo that would be sold in Britain. Soon, the British started buying their own color leaving Indians without money to pay rent to them resulting in death and starvation.

Day of Fasting and Prayer
Indians came together for a day of fasting and prayer as an act of nonviolence. Being aware the British could arrest them at all times, they ignored it and continued their peaceful protests.
A British general was commanded to shoot the crowd while none of them fought back. As a result, there were 1,516 deaths which included women and children, and the use of 1,650 bullets.

Gandhi's fast
Some Indians began to protest against the British by burning British cloth. They walked through towns chanting to remove the British police and when guards caught wind of this, they began attacking Indians. The protesters fought back, burned a building, and beheaded guards. Upset at these actions, Gandhi began an indefinite fast that would only end when no more violence happened.
