Arthur was always wanting to go on adventures. This time Arthur wanted to go on an adventure to learn about plate tectonics. And
he knew just the friend to help him! Arthur picked up his phone
and called his good friend, Captain Calvin.

2

"Hello?" Calvin answered."Hi, this is Arthur and I was wondering if you could help me
learn about plate tectonics."
"Aye Matey! I surrrre can! Come see me at me boaty!"
So Arthur set off!
3

"There! Up ahead! I can see Calvin's boat!" Arthur shouted. He rowed faster, excited to reach his friend and finally get
to learn about plate tectonics. He was almost there!
4

"Ey! How you be, Arthur?""Good! What do you have planned for today?"
"We arrrrrr gonna take a journey to view a mid-
ocean ridge first!"
"What's that?"
"You will see, Arthur."
5

"We are now at what is called a mid-ocean ridge. Mid-ocean ridgesare found at divergent boundaries. Divergent boundaries are two
plates that are sliding apart. This process causes a ridge to form
in the bottom of the ocean, which we call a mid-ocean ridge,"
Calvin explained.
"Wow! That is so cool!" Arthur exclaimed. (Part of Objective 6 & 8)
6

"Mid-ocean ridges are part of what cause seafloor spreading.""What is that?" Arthur asked.
"Seafloor spreading occurs when hot, dense material below the Earth's
crust rises to the surface at a mid-ocean ridge. It then flows sideways,
carrying the seafloor away from the ridge. As the seafloor spreads,
magma moves up and flows from the cracks, cools, and forms new
seafloor! (Objective 5)" Calvin explained.
"That is awesome!"
7

Having learned about mid-ocean ridges, divergent boundaries and seafloor spreading,
Arthur and Calvin set off to learn about
volcanoes and convergent boundaries."Whoa! Look at that volcano!" Arthur exclaimed.
"Yes! Volcanoes are formed when two plates move together. This
happens at what is called a convergent boundary. Mountains can
also be formed at convergent boundaries," Calvin told Arthur. (Part
of Objective 6 & 8)
8

Having made it safely back on land, Arthur and Captain Calvin beganto feel the ground shake and tremble.
"Whoa! What's happening?!"
"That, me matey, be an earthquake. Earthquakes occur attransform boundaries. Those are boundaries where plates
slide past one another. Earthquakes result from the buildup
of energy in rocks. When all of that built up energy is released
it causes the ground to tremble, which is an earthquake (Objective
6 finished, Objective 8 finished, and Objective 10)."
9

"Well, we have almost reached the end of ourrrr journey matey! But the last thingwe arrrrr gonna learn about is the theory of continental drift. There was once a
great scientist named Wegener and he hypothesized that all the continents had once
formed one, large super-continent that he called Pangaea, but that they had slowly
drifted apart to be the continents that we know now (Objective 3)"
"Wow, that is crazy! I never knew that!" Arthur exclaimed.
