"Coming!" Charlie shouts. He peers out the window and looks excitedly up at the sky, "See you soon Mr. Moon"
"Charlie hurry up! You're going to miss breakfast!" Anna yells.
Charlie was awoken by the morning sun and the loud sound of his sister yelling to him that breakfast was ready.

Charlie walks downstairs and eats breakfast with his mother, father, and sister, Anna before going to school.

The Moon
As Charlie walks into class his class, his teacher Mr. Mars greets them, "Happy Monday Class! This week is 'Moon Week' we will be learning all about the moon!"
A giant smile overtakes Charlie's face, as his favorite part of the day is saying goodbye to the moon each night before he goes to bed!

THe Moon

Mr. Mars begins, "Now class if you take a look over here at the board, you will see that the moon goes through 8 different phases and its cycle is about 28 days long!"

The Moon goes through a 28-Day Cycle!
Phase 1: The New Moon
Phase 2: The Waxing Crescent
Phase 3: First Quarter Moon
Phase 4: The Waxing Gibbous
Phase 5: The Full Moon
Phase 6: The Waning Gibbous
Phase 7: The Third Quarter Moon
Phase 8: The Waning Crescent Moon
Back to Phase 1!

THe Moon

"You will notice by looking at these phases that depending on where it is in its' cycle, the moon will appear in many different shapes throughout the 28 days. See if you can spot some of them throughout your day!

"Why yes! It does Charlie!" Matt exclaims
"Hey Matt, doesn't this soccer ball look like a full moon?" Charlie asks.

GYM CLASS
As Charlie and his friends walk into art class with their teacher Mrs. Darla, she announces that they will be sketching fruit baskets today, like the one on the board!
Sally immediately notices something similar about the fruit and its shapes.

Woah! That banana looks like the crescent phase the moon is in!
Wow it does! And the lemon looks like one of the gibbous phases too!
The basket also looks like the first or third-quarter shape!

HOMEWORK TIME
The answer is 8! Just like there are 8 phases in the moon cycle!

After the school day ends and Charlie finishes his homework it's time for dinner with his family! As his parents finish cooking up dinner and the sun starts to set, he and his sister eagerly await by the window looking for the moon but have trouble finding it.

"Does anyone know where the moon is? I couldn't find it!" Charlie anxiously asks.
It's probably still hiding! Wait till bedtime, I'm sure it'll come out then." Anna reassures him.

"Mom! Dad! I still can't see the moon! What happened? Where'd it go?
"Don't worry Charlie! This just means that the moon is in its new moon phase tonight."
Yes, you can't see it because all of the sun's light is getting reflected away from us so we can't see the illuminated parts!

"Oh! Mr. Mars talked about this phase in class!
Goodnight!
We can talk more about it tomorrow, goodnight Charlie!

See you soon Mr. Moon...I hope.
