                    my way around my 

little candy cottage when I smell 

children roaming around my 

home. Because I am a witch, I 

cannot see; however, I have the 

nose of a wild animal.   I begin to 

prepare some food   to make the 

children feel comfortable when 

they find my mysterious ginger 

bread house.  

    Suddenly, the smell is gone 

and I know that they must have 

found their way back home to 

their   step-mother and father.   I 

put   the food in a cabinet and 

place my old head onto my dusty 

pillow. 

    I am awakened by a foul 

smell tickling the inside of 

my nose. I realize that the 

children are closer than 

ever. I decide to bring my 

sweets outside and sit in 

my rocking chair to make 

the children feel at home 

when they finally arrive.

  “Hancel, what is that?” 

A young timid voice says, 

only a few feet away. 

“I believe it is a house 

made of ginger. Come on 

Gretal, let’s go inside,” 

the boy says stuttering  

closer and closer   to my 

frail nostrils.  

“Well, hello children,” I say in the 

kindest voice possible. “How are you 

doing on this fine morning? Are you 

lost?” 

I hear the boy speak again in a strong 

voice, “Well, yes actually, our step-

mother has kicked us out of our home, 

and we have nowhere to go.”  

“My dearest children, I would have the 

honor to raise you beautiful tykes! 

Please, come inside!”   I say as I'm 

showing them inside the cottage.

 “This is my ginger bread house, but 

you may call it a cottage if you please. 

Gretal is it? Would you mind helping me 

in the kitchen?” 

This is perfect!   I finally have the 

opportunity to eat these young  

children. I have not eaten a child in 

ages, but I must make the boy   fatter 

than he is now.
