The country has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, primarily due to the conversion of forests for agriculture, particularly oil palm plantations. Deforestation not only destroys critical habitats for biodiversity but also contributes to climate change through the release of carbon stored in the trees.

Air and water pollution is another major problem in Indonesia, particularly in urban areas. The high levels of air pollution are caused by vehicle emissions and industrial activities, while water pollution is caused by the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste. These pollution issues not only harm the environment but also have negative impacts on the health of local communities.

Over-exploitation of natural resources is also a significant environmental issue in Indonesia. This includes overfishing, illegal logging, and illegal mining. These activities not only deplete natural resources but also contribute to habitat destruction and biodiversity loss.
