Continue reading to have a great understanding of the Jewish holiday of Purim!

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Esther who became the Queen of Persia. During this time, she hid her Jewish identity.

During her rule, the Jews had one major enemy: Haman. He plotted the Jews' destruction.

However, Esther was able to reveal her Jewish identity, stop Haman's plot in its tracks, and save the Jewish people!

Today, Purim is a community holiday full of joyful celebration! While by custom it is a minor holiday, it is celebrated like a major one. Jews celebrate and affirm the Jewish survival and continuity over history.

What can you do on Purim?
Bake hamantaschen! (triangle shaped pastries)
Distribute Misloach Manot baskets to friends and family!
Read the Scroll of Esther in the synagogue!
Dress up in costume!

Costumes are worn to the synagogue during Purim to represent Esther hiding her true Jewish identity to protect her people.

The Purim play honors Queen Esther and her saving of the Jewish people and is performed every Purim.

Purim baskets are traded between friends and members of the community as commanded in Esther’s scrolls.

On Purim, the children eat Hamantaschen cookies. They are in the shape of a triangle to represent the evil Haman’s hat.
Today, the villain Haman symbolizes the oppressors of Jews.
Their celebration on Purim symbolizes the ways that Jews can overcome this oppression today.

We dress up and wear costumes, and read the Scrolls of Esther.
