Life Before Presidency
JFK was born soon after the first World War being the
first president born in the 20th century. Kennedy also
came from a wealthy family and also had a grandfather
who was the mayor of Boston.
John joined the Navy during WWII. The twenty-nine-
year-old Kennedy won election to the U.S. Congress
representing a Boston district. He served three terms in
the U.S. House of Representatives, earning a reputation
as a conservative Democrat.

Although Kennedy looked in the presidential spotlight with
great health and vigor his was plagued with illnesses from
Malaria, to Addison's disease.
Left thin and sallow by malaria brought home from the war in
the Pacific. He relied on a steady stream of painkillers and
steroids to treat the symptoms of his many ailments.
Constant back pain would prevent him from lifting even his
own small children.

JFK had many successes throughout
his presidential career. With all ups in
life there must be downs and
Kennedy also suffered downs.

Success: Preventing Nuclear War
When photographs of nuclear missile sites began
popping up in the United States. Kennedy
considered a U.S. air strike to destroy the
missiles, but there was uncertainty about
whether or not the nuclear weapons in Cuba
were already operational, which meant that any
such attack could have sparked a nuclear war.

Failures: Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a a plan to
overthrow Cuba's Communist government.
At 2 p.m. on April 19, after two days of being
pounded by Cuban militia, tanks, and fighter
planes, the brigade of Cuban exiles surrendered.
Sixty-eight were killed in the Bay of Pigs debacle;
1,209 were captured; nine of these died of
asphyxiation in a windowless sealed truck that took
them from the beach to prison in Havana. After
twenty days of interrogation, the prisoners were
given show trials, and sentenced to life in prison.

This relates to the Cold War
because JFK was a leader of the
war.
JFK was a charismatic leader who
cared greatly about the citizens of
the United States and Promised to
not the Communist thoughts int
erupt the way of life.
