Hey, my name is Sam and I am fifteen years
old. I have a nine year old brother and a mom
and a dad. We live in Canteen, Ohio and my
family has been here for many generations
now. My birthday was yesterday, and that's
how i got you. I will try and right everyday but
life gets pretty busy here some times.
-Sam Ferguson

Today I came across an article on the so-called
“Manifest destiny”. I found it incredibly
inspiring, because it talked about our new
country becoming great, and what better way
to become great than to have our territory
spread from sea to sea. It said as a new
country we need to prove ourselves and strive
to be perfect. This whole moving west idea
sounds brilliant to me and I think I might take
it up with Dad.

I have been talking to my dad for quite some time
now about moving west, and now that this whole
Alamo deal is sorted out, and we have annexed
Texas, he seams to finally be listening to me. I think
the only reason we wouldn’t go is because he might
feel that if we move west we might loose some of our
voice and political matters like the decision to Annex
Texas, but I don’t understand why he cares. It’s not
like us saying that Texas should join America made
any difference in the final decision. Anyways, I’m
glad they did annex Texas. If we’re going to become
a big and powerful country we can’t be stopped by
other up-starts like Mexico, and it was as good as
ours, with how many Americans were living there.
One of the most important things for us too, is
expanding our country, and Texas helped with that
part of the plan substantially.

Today my best friend and his family left on the
Oregon trail. Everyone has been talking about
this Oregon fever, but it hasn't really hit me
how true it is until Johnny left. I must have
asked my dad a thousand times if we could go
with him, but every time i got the same
answer, "We will leave soon Sam don't worry,
but we aren't ready yet." I hope we can live
near him when we get to oregon but I can't
shake the feeling that I will never see him
again.

Today I read in the newspaper about the Lewis
and Clark Expedition and the Louisiana
Purchase. I think that could have very possibly
been the greatest deal this country has ever
made. I mean why not buy that much land for
so little? The Lewis and Clark expedition seems
awesome too. I mean they traveled across this
land where there could have been anything,
and made it back fine! A career as an explorer
seems so brutal, but full of adventures. All of
their discoveries make me even more excited
to move west. I can't wait!
