Once there was a girl named Rubetta who lived in
New York. She was kind and gentle, everyone loved her,
and she loved everybody, especially her grandmother.
But the most interesting fact about Rubetta was that all
her clothes were red. And because Rubetta wore red all
the time, her nickname became Ruby, and that was what
everyone knew her by.

One morning, Ruby came home to hear her grandfather had just
died.
“Ruby, I know your grandmother is very sad and will want
company.” said Ruby’s sweet yet stern mother. “I would like for you
to take the subway and bring her this cake tomorrow afternoon. "
“Of course, Mother!” replied Ruby. Though she feared the
subway, she adored grandmother and their visits were always
pleasant.
“I know you are very sensible,” added mother, “But I need you
to remember to avoid strangers on the way.”
Ruby mumbled a “yes, mam” bitterly, annoyed with her mother.
But she tried to do as told and after school the next day, Ruby
picked up the decorative cake and hurried down to the subway.

On the Subway, Ruby forgot her mother’s reminder
and began to talk to a stranger. He was a man wearing
dark clothing with piercing eyes and a dirty face. He asked
Ruby where she was going with the cake and Ruby told
him her designated location, including the number of the
apartment! At the next stop, the man excused himself.
While Ruby continued riding on the train, the man took a
shortcut to Ruby’s grandmother’s apartment with a car!

When the man reached the apartment, he knocked
lightly. Grandmother called the man in, thinking he was
Ruby. The man let himself in and before the frail old lady
could cry for help, he shot her! He then stuffed
grandmother in a closet and put on some of her extra
clothing, planning to fool Ruby.

A few minutes later, Ruby knocked on the door. The man
invited her in with a sweet voice. When Ruby entered the
bedroom, she could scarcely recognize her grandmother!
“Grandma,” began Ruby, “what big ears you have!”
“The better to see hear with, my dear,” replied the man.
“Grandma,” exclaimed Ruby, “what a big nose you have!”’
“The better to smell you with, my dear,” replied the man as
climbed out of the bed.
