Starting

Side view on alien sillhouette, humanesque. No ears, nose, or hair, he is big-eyed and neon green skin. He sits at a desk, hunched over, scribbling words into a file, occasionally puts a hat on. A long, ear-high (if he had ears) coat neck, and an almost dress-like coat bottom wrinkles on top of his chair. Under the coat, he has on a normal, everyday white T-shirt. Window behind him, storm raging, rain patters window. Camera zooms to a door near him. A beat. With a sudden slam, the door opens, hitting the wall.  Three-quarter view on a female alien, about the same age as the man, wears a soft and long puffy dress, and

 the fabric flows beautifully. With that, skinny sleeves that are puffed at the wrists. Her long, open hair is a dark, pitch black. Her hair reaches down to her waist. The edges of her long bangs, which split in the middle of her head, curve towards her face. She stomps toward the man, camera follows her. Slowly, as she approaches, she is turned to a sillhouette by the window.

UNKNOWN MAN

Ah, hello, Katherrynne. I was just finishing up a case.

KATHERRYNNE

Johnson, you idiot! You didn't come to Lily's birthday party! She won't do anything! This isn't the first time this happened!

 ANGLE ON JOHNSON

Gets up off the chair, closes case file. Turns to Katherrynne. Takes hat off, hangs hat on hat stand near him. Opens mouth to speak, thinking of what to say.

ANGLE ON KATHERRYNNE

While he thinks, she grinds her teeth. Gives Johnson a small shove. Looks at case file in anger. In corner of her eye, spots an outdated family photo. In photo, Katherrynne, Johnson, and baby Lily sit at a table, all smiling. Pushes photo down, hiding image. 

JOHNSON

What? But I thought her birthday party was tomorrow. Katie, I-

ANGLE ON KATIE(Katherrynne)

Punches Johnson's arm.

KATIE

Of course you thought it was tomorrow! You're always so absorbed in all this detective trash that you can't even just walk across the street to tell your own daughter happy birthhday! I'm angry at you, Lily should be angry at you, and you should be angry at yourself!

ANGLE ON KATIE

Stomps on Johnson's foot with high heel.

ANGLE ON JOHNSON

Screams. Falls back onto chair. Takes off shoe and sock, looking at heel mark on his foot.

JOHNSON

What did you do that for? I didn't try and break your bones! And don't say you didn't mean to!

Camera goes immediately to door. Door creaks. Small girl alien walks out, stands near door. 

Start scene 2

UNKNOWN GIRL

Mommy? Daddy? Can we go to the dog shelter now? You said I could have a dog.

KATIE

Lily! Let's go! And we'll bring your daddy if you want. Johnny, come on!

ANGLE ON JOHNSON

Puts on sock and shoe, puts coat back on.

ANGLE ON ALL OF THEM

They walk out the door, holding hands. Only one of them looks happy, which is Lily. They walk through a bustling city-- carriages zoom through the streets, store owners calling people to buy things.

DISTANT VOICE

Dog shelter! Dogs ready to adopt! Puppies as young as 1 month old, or get a special order to have it as young as 8 weeks old!

LILY

Look, look, there! Up! Um, the big... What was it..? Sign! The big sign!

Start scene 3

ANGLE ON ALL OF THEM

Looking up at a big sign that says, DOGS AND PUPS FOR ADOPTION, GET A BEST FRIEND NOW FOR ONLY 100 TO 30 DOLLARS!

They walk into the dog shelter after pushing through the crowd outside. A stocky alien man stands at a desk, gestures to the Crowfords.

SHELTER OWNER

Why, hello, there, Johnny! Does the police force like their new dog?

JOHNSON

Yeah, Tom. That pup's doing a great job with us. I'd like to see the youngest dogs here, please. Lily gets to choose it, the price limit is 100 dollars.

SHELTER OWNER

Ah, okay. It'll be right there, the door to the left.

JOHNSON

Thanks.

Start scene 4

ANGLE ON ALL

Johnson opens the door, letting Lily and Katherrynne walk through, then walks in and closes it. Lily is already looking at all the puppies. She gasps when she sees one. Both girls are staring at it, so Johnson walks over to see. The pup has black floppy ears, a brown coat, and a white stomach.

JOHNSON

That one?

LILY

Um, I wanna see the other ones, then I'll choose.

ANGLE ON LILY

She looks at all of them, and it takes about an hour until she chooses.

LILY

Look at the black one right there! It's that one!

ANGLE ON LILY

She points towards a very small black puppy in a kennel with its bigger siblings. She loves that puppy.

JOHNSON

Oh, Lily, we'll see. It might be too young, though.

ANGLE ON ALL

They walk out. Johnson speaks to the shop owner and they walk back into the room.

JOHNSON

See, she wants the small black one but I don't know if it's old enough to be adopted.

SHELTER OWNER

Oh, the runt? She's old enough, just small. Might even stay that size, but you can have her. Because she's a runt, she's just 40$.

ANGLE ON THE MEN

The shelter owner opens the door to the kennel and carefully scoops up the tiny pup. Johnson gives him the money and takes the pup.

LILY

Thank you!

ANGLE ON THE CROWFORDS

They walk away from the shelter, Lily holding their new tiny and cute puppy. Johnson is holding some instructions on how to care for and train dogs, reading them and occasionally hitting poles.

LILY

Daddy, look at her! She's so cute!

ANGLE ON LILY

Pets puppy's belly, holding her on her back like a baby.

JOHNSON

Yeah, she's great. Let's get inside before it snows.
