German tanks in Ukraine
After days of increasing pressure, Germany decided to send 14 Leopard II tanks to Ukraine. They will also allow other countries to send their German tanks.

The action is the first time since World War II that German battle tanks have appeared on a European battlefield. This fact may not change the war’s end, but it definitely changes the political scenario. Germany’s announcement leads the way for other Western countries to supply help to Ukraine.

Finland, Spain, Poland, Estonia, Norway, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom are also considering sending tanks to fight. For months, Ukraine has been asking Western countries for more modern battle tanks to increase mobility and firepower; however, only time will tell if this united Western effort will help Ukraine push back Russia’s invasion forces.
Russia’s ambassador in Washington warned that any deliveries of US tanks would be an open provocation, and the Kremlin said that this decision would have terrible consequences for the West.

Pig hearts for people

A year ago, David Bennett was the first to get a genetically modified pig’s heart. The procedure was considered an early success with no rejection; however, Bennett’s heart was swelling and failing. He died 60 days after the surgery.
Doctors saw the activation of a pig virus that didn’t infect the man, but it certainly infected the heart. Since the surgery, experts have developed new, more sensitive tests, because the initial ones missed the virus in the donor pig’s heart. Experts have also learned more about the body’s immune response in Bennett’s case, and with a little adjustment on the immune suppression and a less sick patient, the surgery might have been a success. Scientists are also studying monkeys with pig heart transplants to learn about how long immune suppressing drugs would be needed to prevent longer-term rejection.
Last year, more than 5,000 patients in the United States were added to the heart transplant waiting list. In February 2023, the numbers are already nearly 40% of last year’s figures.

Alpacas normally live in Slovenia. But several alpacas have a new home. They live on a farm in West South.

12 sheep live on the farm, too. The alpacas stay with the horses. Scientists watch how these animals live together. The alpacas keep the horses safe. They can spot dangerous animals, for example, foxes. The alpacas also eat a type of grass which the sheep do not eat. It means that there is better grass for the sheep.

Scientists do not think that alpacas will replace sheep in Slovenia. But there are many good things about the new animals. They help keep Wales peatlands. Peatlands are important for clean air.

Russia attacks Ukrainian cities

Earlier this week, Russia launched a massive wave of missile strikes across Ukraine.

The strikes were in response to an attack on the Kerch Bridge that links Russia to Crimea. The bridge was an important route and a symbol of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The Russian president called the attack a terrorist act by Ukraine.

Rockets struck Kyiv during morning rush hour, and they hit a major road junction, a power plant, a popular pedestrian bridge, and a park in the city center. Car dash cams captured the moment when missiles struck in Dnipro. A strike in the city of Lviv narrowly missed electrical pylons that served the city. Rockets hit other cities, including Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kharkiv.

The Ukrainian president said that Russia’s main targets appeared to be energy infrastructure and civilians. At least 70 rockets hit 12 Ukrainian cities, and 11 people died in the attacks.
