We live in Greece, in an
area of Athens called
Glyka Nera.
It is located at the bottom
of Mountain Ymittos.
In Ymittos there is a
forest with many trees,
plants and animals.

The olive tree is the symbol of the goddess Athena.

It reaches 80 meters high.It gives us oxygen.

Hello! Our school is situated in the North part of Patras, near the sea. In our play yard there is a grove of willow trees and a ban yan tree, as well. In the suburbs, there is a march, where live several species of heron and the colourfull alcuone!

The Willow tree, is a tree of almost 500 types, and with numerous references in myths of many countries.
In the Greek Mythology it was the sacred tree of goddess Hera and was considered the second most ancient tree like the oak tree.

Information
The Olive tree, grows in the mediterranian countries. In the Greek Mythololy is refered as the sacred tree of goddess Athena. According to a myth, Poseidon and Athena wanted to be the protectors of the city of Kekrops. Poseidon offered water and Athena offered an olive tree. People voted for the olive tree so Athena won and gave her name in the city, i.e. Athina.

The Plane tree, in one of the biggest trees and people call it the King of greek flora. In the greek mythology it was the daughter of Poseidon, that is why it grows near water. She had two brothers, who were giants, that is why it is big and high. When her brothers died, she was turned into a tree, called Plane tree.

Name: Pine tree - Aleppo
(P. halepensis)

Information
The Pine is sacred to Dionysos. Pine resin was used to seal ceramic wine vessels (called amphora) and was also added intentionally to fermenting grapes for flavor and possibly for its medicinal and spiritual properties (today, this resin-flavored white wine is called retsina).
The Pine was also closely linked to the sea god Poseidon as the tree’s wood was prized as a ship building material for its ability to withstand decay. Pine pitch (resin) was also used for waterproofing, as a sealant for joints, and as a flame retardant for ships at sea. It is thought that Poseidon’s sacred groves consisted of Pine trees, especially the coastal varieties such as the Aleppo (P. halepensis) or Umbrella (P. pinea) Pine.

Information
The Laurel Tree grows in the Mediterranean. Its leaves are an ingredient in many recipes and the oil of its fruits is used in flavoring soaps.
In the Greek Mythology, there was a nymph called Daphne (Laurel). Apollo wanted to marry her, but she didn't. So she turned into a tree. Her hands became branches and her hair became leaves.

Narcissus is a plant with beautiful flowers ad can grow in all kinds of soil as long as it is well watered.
In the Greek Mythology, Narcissus was very handsome and he was drown in a lake while trying to touch his reflexion in the water.

Information
Carnation is a beautiful flower of many types and many colours.
In the Greek Mythology, it was the favorite flower of Zeus. According to the myth, Zeus was jealous of Hera, who had Lilly as a favorite flower. So, he threw a lightining on Earth. As a resylt, Carnations grew where the lighting fell.

Information
Rose is an ornamental plant and is used not only in perfume production but also as a jam product.
There is a myth about Rodanthi, an ancient greek woman, who expressed her opinion about women.. That women are wise such as men, too. As a result, men tried to harm her. Goddess Artemis, saved her by turning her into a rose, with a beautiful flower but also with thons for her protection.

Name: Dolphin
Information
There are 4 species of dolphin who live in the greek seas: the common dolpthin, the rhino dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin and the cinderella dolphin.
Dolphin was a beloved sea animal in ancient Greece, too. There is a myth about Arion, a great musician, who was saved by a dolphin. Arion had won a golden prize in a music contest and the crew of the ship threw him in the sea, in order to steal the prize. A dolphin saved him an safely returned him to his island.

There are 8 species of eagle living in Greece. A rare one is also found in Peloponesse and is called osprey.
The eagle was the sacred bird of god Zeus. According to a myth, Zeus sent away two eagles, one to the east and the other to the west, in order to find the center of the Earth. The two eagles met in Delphes, who was concidered as the center of the Earth since then.

The dog in the photo is said to be living in Greece since the antiquity.
It is called Coconi. It is said that Appollo was the first to domesticate a dog and that he offered this animal to his sister Artemis to accompany her in hunting.

Owl is a nocturnal bird and is found in the north of Greece. A kind of owl called Otus scops (gionis in greek) is more widespread. In the ancient times, the owl was the sacred bird of Athena and was known as the bird of knowledge and wisdom.

Information
Alcyone lives near the sea and is fed with fish. It layes its eggs in Winter, in January, and during these days the weather is warm. There is a greek myth about Alcyone, trying to explain this weather change. Alcyone was married to a man called Kyikas. As they were both proud of being so happily married they compared themselves to God Zeus and Goddess Hera. The Gods punnished them by leaving Kyikas drown in the sea. After Alcyone has being waiting him for a long time to return, was transformed in a bird who lives by the sea.
