Sara was a girl from the North, who fell in love 

with a freedman, called Josh. But her dad, Mr. 

Robinson, was racist, and he didn't like them 

together.

Josh worked as a share cropper in Sara´s 

house. The first time she saw him, she saw 

something special in him, and so did he. They 

stared talking to each other, and they became 

friends. 

But around 3 months after they were talking to 

each other, her dad started noticing that they 

were talking, and he was very angry. Mr. 

Robinson didn't like their connection so he fired 

Josh. 

When this happened, Sara told her dad that if 

he fired Josh, she would become his girlfriend. 

He said yes, even though he didn't want them 

to be together, but he didn't want him to be in 

the house.

Every time Josh and Sara went somewhere 

they got discriminated because of their 

difference in skin color. People would be 

making fun of them and sometimes ignore 

them. One time Josh Almost got kidnapped by 

the KKK. So it was really hard for them to be 

together. 

Sara´s dad was so against their relationship 

that he searched for a better boyfriend for her. 

The guy’s name was John Maxwell, but people 

called him Max. He was from England and he 

was rich.

Mr. Robinson thought he would be perfect for 

Sara, so he forced her to break up with Josh, 

and get married with Max, even when she 

didn't like him. But even though the 

Reconstruction Plan freed the slaves, and gave 

them rights, this didn't stop the KKK or the 

racism. But these things didn't retain Sara 

from the love she felt for Josh.

Now that she was married with Max, she 

wasn't supposed to see Josh. But she didn't 

care, she was still seeing him. But every time 

she came back home, Max would always force 

her to say where she was at.
