It was a beautiful spring day.
The grass was green for the first time in months.
Sammy raced out the kitchen door into the backyard.

There were many creatures outside for him to bark at.

A bird playing in the bird bath,
a squirrel searching for nuts in
the grass,

a bee buzzing in the flower garden.

But there was one
creature in particular
that caught his
attention;
a cat perched in the
tree.
He bristled his scruff.
“BARK! BARK! BARK
BARK BARK!”

The cat stopped licking her paw
and gave him a disgusted look.
“What’s the matter with you?”
“You’re a cat.” He called up, “It’s
my job to bark at you.”
“Says who?” She asked.

Sammy thought about this for a minute.
“I don’t know.” He said.
The cat hopped down from her branch.
“BARK BARK BARK!”

“You’re very loud.” She said. “Why don’t you
try being quiet?”

“Why would I do that?” He asked.
“Because.” She replied. “Quiet is nice.”
Sammy sat down in the grass.

The bird playing in the
bird feeder chirped.
The wind rustled.
The sun warmed Sammy’s
fur.
“See?” The cat chimed.
“Isn’t that nice?”

“Yes.” Sammy said.
The cat leaped over the fence.
“Wait!” He shouted. “Where are you going?”
A voice came from behind the fence.
“I’m going home. I live in that building with the big
yellow machines.”

“My name is Sammy. What’s your name?” He
asked.
“Lola.” She replied. “I’ll come back tomorrow.”

And every day after that, she did.
Sammy and Lola enjoyed their long talks.
As the days passed,
Lola came later and later.
Sammy didn’t think anything of it.
Until one day,

She didn’t come back at all.

A whole day passed before finally
he decided to go looking for her.
“Something could be wrong.” He thought.
Sammy dug a hole under the fence and squeezed
through it.

He started down the street towards the building
with the big yellow machines.
“Lola?” He called.
There was no answer, so he went inside.

“Lola?”He called again.
A voice sounded from behind some crates.
“Sammy? What are you doing here?”

Sammy stared at Lola.
Nuzzled by her were four tiny kittens.
“I was worried about you.” He said.
Lola smirked. “You don’t have to worry about
me, I can manage myself.”
