The distinctive hump on the back of humpback whales, along with their knobby cranium and long flippers, make them easy to identify. With white patches on their belly and flippers, they have a sleek black or dark gray frame. These whales have a maximum length of 50 feet and a maximum weight of 40 tons.
2
Humpback whales, like all baleen whales, have a row of baleen plates in their jaw as opposed to teeth. The same substance that makes up human hair and nails is used to make these plates—keratin. These dishes are used to remove krill and tiny fish from the water.
3
The long annual migrations of humpback whales, which can cover thousands of kilometers, are well-known. They spend the summer months feeding on krill and small fish in the cooler seas close to the poles. They move to warmer seas close to the equator in the winter to mate and give birth.
4
The intricate melodies of male humpback whales, which can last up to 20 minutes, are well known. These songs are used in mating practices in addition to being a means of communication. The intent and significance of these compositions are still being researched by scientists.
5
Being social creatures, humpback whales frequently move in groups known as pods. These groups can contain a few whales or as many as twenty. They have been observed to engage in joint hunting techniques, even collaborating to construct bubble nets to capture prey.
