Thanks To Mrs. Gower for making this assignment, Amelia, Kailyn, and my family and my dog, Poppy, for
supporting me, and Amelia, Kailyn, Mrs. Gower, Dylan,
and Evan B. for willing to be in this messed up book of
mine. :)

I don't know, Amelia.
What is it, Shaylin?

THE MYSTERY
BOX

"O.K. You can go... Now!" Mrs. Gower announces.
Everyone runs and pushes each other to the
playground. I stay at my desk with Amelia and wait
for it to clear up. "Let's go." I say. "Kay." Amelia
agrees. "Bye, Mrs. Gower!" I chirp. "Bye, girls! Have
fun!" Mrs. Gower calls back. "O.K.! We will!" Amelia
shouts. We run off the to the blacktop, letting the
door shut behind us. I stare at a strange shape near
the fence corner. "Shaylin?" Amelia questions,
nudging me. *Kah!* I gasp, snapping back to reality.
"Huh?!" I say, looking around, remembering where I
am. "Are you okay?" Amelia wonders, "Yeah... yeah.
I'm-I'm fine just..." My voice trails off. "Just WHAT?!
Wait. What were you looking at?" "Both questions
answered at the same time. Follow me." We walk to

the fence & I see the strange shape was a pile of
leaves. It smells of dough outside. It had just stopped
raining & the field reeks of mud. It's early summer so
why are there leaves? And why do they look like
fabric? I bend down & pick up a leaf. I twirl the leaf in
my hand and rub my fingers across it. I feel the
threads gliding through my fingers and the stiff
plastic stem warming up in my loose fist. "They're
fake." I inform Amelia, dropping the "leaf" and
dusting my hands while rising to my feet. "Let's see if
there's anything." Amelia suggests. We dig up the
fabric pieces & right before us an old box. The box is
painted cream but the paint's chipping off. The paint
is rough & it's cream color is fading away with dirt.
The rusty, golden lock shimmers in the sunlight.
Ironicly, we

find a key ring under the box. We try all the gold, silver, and
copper rusted keys but no such luck. Also, as if magic was
invloved, we find a lighter, a match, and a crate marked,
CAUTION: DANGEROUS EXPLOSIVES in the fake leaves.
"LET'S BLOW IT UP!!!" I yell. "I don't really think that's a
good idea." Amelia assures me. "C'mon.
PLEEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSE?!" I pout. "O.K. Fine. Only
ONCE, though. You're SO lucky I've always wanted to blow
something up." She gives in. "YES! THANK YOU!" I open
the box and place the dynomite around the old box. I take
out the lighter and flick it on. "O.K." I whisper."Here goes
nothing." I touch the flame and the match together and
engage the ropes with the red flaming end of the match.
Flames lick the air and the ropes as they burn down to the
red cylinders.
