Welcome to Sword Art Online! was emblazoned on a weathered banner that
hovered in the sky.
I was living inside a game; a Virtual Reality. I could move around
like I could in real life, it was a miracle! This was my first Virtual
Reality game, and my first time using the helmet to play a game. I think
you would put it on your head and it connects to your nerves or something, I
really don’t know.
I was trapped in a cylindrical hologram that was probably the
starting screen. After tapping ‘Accept’ and ‘I have agreed and
read the Terms and Conditions’ about a billion times it violently
spat me into the game, in a very deserted Greek-styled town. It
was pretty awesome though-- all buildings were towering with
their enormous marble pillars and patios, and it felt like you
were a tiny ant just walking next to them. I veered over and saw
the most beautiful girl was strolling around the parameters of the
village, in a dark and eerie way. The desert skull from those Wild
West movies was formed into a morbid crown made of bone that
slithered around her head. Choppy jet-black hair fell so gracefully from
her crown I sighed. She had a black-feathered cloak that looked like furled
wings.

“You must be new…” she said suddenly, which made me jump. She stared at
my name tag.. “..Leif.”
“Oh, heh-heh, yea..” I chuckled awkwardly.
“I am Light Nobuyuki.” she introduced herself. “I am the creator of this
game.”
“Wow, really?”
“Yes. You look familiar.. have any siblings?” Light asked slightly curiously,
but her expression remained blank.
“Yea, an older brother, his name’s River.”
I could see her trying to keep down a grin. “Oh, interesting.. Well, I guess
you better be going. It’s really late in the real world.”
“But I just started the game!”
“Then you should’ve started it earlier. Scurry off now, we’re doing some
maintenance on this server anyway..”

“Leif!” Mom boomed. “Explain this!”
I groggily rolled out of bed and limped into my parents’ room. She slapped a
fan of sheets onto her bed. “You got a B on your report card.”
I rolled my eyes. “Mom..”
“Don’t you back-talk me! You’re the most stupid son ever!” she hissed. I
shot death glances at my report card. I stormed out of the room steaming.
Maybe I could get River to sign it. He’d never yell at me, right?
“Where are you going?” demanded my dad, who was waiting outside the
door. He bared his fist as if to punch me. Moments later, after trying but
failing to get past him he nailed me to the wall using his fingers and beat the
life out of me.
“Stop it!” I shouted at him. I caught a glimpse of Mom smiling in the corner
of my eye. I reddened in anger and socked him in the face before making a
mad dash for the door.
“Come back here!” they hooted. I slammed the door behind me and ran off to
the community park.

“Hey, kid, get out of here. Where are your parents?” a police officer told me
when I came.
“I ran away.” I muttered to myself.
She blinked like she didn’t hear anything. “There’s a crime scene here. You
don’t want to be in danger.”
Now that she mentioned it, I noticed all the caution tape around the park.
Police cars were plied up on the street next to the park like pieces dumped off
a chess board. Smoke was billowing from a nearby building. Moms and dads
were covering their child from seeing the scene. It was a horrible day here, and
you could feel it.
“What happened?” I asked.
“A young teenager murdered everyone that was in this park just a few minutes
ago.”
“Who is he?”
“Over there. His name is River.”
My eyes widened and my mouth opening in shock. River?
There he was, the lighting of the rainy summer afternoon making his face look
freaky. Ruffled black hair shielded one eye in a strange way. Cops were talking
to him, and he stood as motionless as a statue.

“What’s wrong, Leif?” Light cooed.
I grumbled. “You did this.. you did this didn’t you!?”
Her black lips lifted into a menacing grin. “Clever.”
I swung my sword at her, but it just passed right through her. “Why?!?”
“You see, Leif. My uncle is Sugou Nobuyuki; the creator of another game. He
was using 300 victims as test subjects by controlling them within his game. He
was defeated by some great hero named Kirito. I can’t fail like him. I will reign
over Sword Art Online, and slowly leak into the real world by controlling your
loved ones.”
“No…”
“Yes.” she smiled. “I have ways to destroy people’s lives, and this is just the
beginning!”
“Let River go!” I roared. “I’m going to beat you, Light, and you’ll pay!”
“Good luck.”
That moment, my vision filled with patches of black and I was logged out.

“Mom! Dad!” I started desperately, them looking oddly at me. “You won’t
believe this, but there’s this creator of a game I’m playing and well, she’s
controlling River! She’s the one causing him to murder, he’s possessed or
something! We need to stop her, we-”
“Calm down, Leif. What is going on with you?” Dad complained.
“You need to trust me! She has some odd powers, and you know those Virtual
Reality games? Yea, she made one. She’s trying to rule over the real world
using her abilities in the virtual world! Please!”
“Abilities?”
“Look, I don’t understand it either but you need to be on my side for this! Why
else would River start murdering?”
“Show me this ‘creator’.”
I panicked, flailing my arms around in a confused disaster.
“I trust you on this, Leif. I think I might just be-” Mom started, but she gasped.
“Mom?”
“Ah-ack! No! Argh!” she choked, clutching her chest.
“Mom!” I shrieked, running to hold her. Dad was patting her back while she
was in his hands. He was gasping like he was choking. She closed her eyes.

“Mom! Mom! What-?” I huffed. “She isnt..?”
Dad closed his eyes and sighed, wiping a tear away. “She is.”
“No..!” I screamed. “It can’t be!”
“Argh..” he breathed, holding his chest with one hand. “It’s… a heart attack..”
“You too!? No, no, don’t, please!!”
He managed a smile. “.. Sorry. I love you.”
“Dad!”
I ran to him and he collapsed into my arms. Two dead parents in reach. I stared
in disbelief at their sleepy faces and still chests. Images of Light filled my head.
She was cackling like a madman. Was she sending me a vision or something?
This couldn’t be an accident. If she could manipulate River like a puppet, there
was no doubt she could kill my parents. Mom and Dad laid still like River at the
park when the police were questioning him. But why would she kill them now? I
reddened. “Light..”
“Leif..” Light’s voice replied. I couldn’t see her anywhere. She was just a floating
hologram in my mind, but she was still there, still present.
“Why.. isn’t River enough!?”
“Didn’t you say you would win, dear boy?”
“I did, Light.” I grit my teeth. "I wasn't lying, either."
