Part 1
by the students of 6th grade at the Intercultural Primary School of Sapes



I have an idea, Jason. Why don't we go to the beach?
It is too hot to play here.
It was a scorching summer day in late August and the kids were in Dentraki, a beautiful forest area near Sapes. They were playing football, but it was so hot that they couldn't keep going.

That's awesome, Alexandra! There is nothing better than Petrota beach. Let's go!


Ήταν μια καυτή καλοκαιρινή μέρα τέλη Αυγούστου και τα παιδιά βρίσκονταν στο Δεντράκι, ένα όμορφο δάσος κοντά στις Σάπες. Έπαιζαν ποδόσφαιρο, αλλά η ζέστη ήταν υπερβολική.

Καταπληκτική ιδέα Αλεξάνδρα! Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα καλύτερο από την παραλία στα Πετρωτά. Πάμε!
Upon their arrival in Petrota, they were met with an unpleasant surprise: litter scattered along the beach.




What a mess this is! We can't leave the beach like this.
I agree, Jason. Let's clean it up.
Yes, let's start right away.
Κατά την άφιξή τους στα Πετρωτά, αντιμετώπισαν μια δυσάρεστη έκπληξη: σκουπίδια διάσπαρτα σε όλη την παραλία.




Τι χάλια είναι αυτά; Δε γίνεται να αφήσουμε έτσι την παραλία.
Συμφωνώ, Ιάσονα. Ας την καθαρίσουμε.
Εντάξει, ας αρχίσουμε.



Several hours later, they had picked up all the litter and the beach was clean once more. They felt proud for making a difference so now it was time for them to relax.
I'm tired, but it was worth it.
Yeah, I'm really happy that the beach is clean. Let's go for a swim now!




Μετά από μερικές ώρες, μάζεψαν όλα τα σκουπίδια και η παραλία ήταν καθαρή ξανά. ΄Ένιωσαν περήφανοι που έκαναν τη διαφορά, οπότε τώρα ήρθε η ώρα να χαλαρώσουν
Κουράστηκα αλλά άξιζε τον κόπο.
Ναι, χαίρομαι πολύ που είναι καθαρή η παραλία. Πάμε να κολυμπήσουμε τώρα!





The next morning, they planned to ride their bikes downtown. Due to the heavy traffic, they had to park their bikes on the sidewalk.
What a pity that we can't go cycling.
Yes, it would be great if there was a cycling lane.




Το επόμενο πρωί, σχεδίασαν να πάνε με τα ποδήλατά τους στο κέντρο της πόλης. Λόγω της έντονης κίνησης, αναγκάστηκαν να παρκάρουν τα ποδήλατά τους στο πεζοδρόμιο.
Τι κρίμα που δε μπορούμε να κάνουμε ποδήλατο.
Ναι, τι καλά να υπήρχε ποδηλατόδρομος.




They also noticed that the air pollution was getting worse because of the hot summer weather. They felt frustrated because nobody was doing anything to fix the situation.
Look, everyone is taking their cars, and there's a lot of exhaust fumes. It's hot and the atmosphere is suffocating.
If everyone walked or used bicycles and scooters, the air would be so much cleaner.




Επίσης, παρατήρησαν ότι η ατμοσφαιρική ρύπανση χειροτέρευε λόγω της ζέστης του καλοκαιριού. Ένιωσαν απογοητευμένοι επειδή κανείς δεν έκανε κάτι για να διορθώσει την κατάσταση.
Κοίτα, όλοι παίρνουν τα αυτοκίνητά τους και έχει πολύ καυσαέριο. Κάνει και ζέστη και είναι αποπνικτική η ατμόσφαιρα.
Αν όλοι περπατούσαν ή χρησιμοποιούσαν ποδήλατα και σκούτερ, θα ήταν τόσο καθαρός ο αέρας.


In September when they returned to school, they decided to take action and protect the environment.

Earth is our home and we need to protect it.
We are children but we want to do what we can. This is about our future.


Τον Σεπτέμβριο, όταν επέστρεψαν στο σχολείο, αποφάσισαν να
αναλάβουν δράση και να προστατεύσουν το περιβάλλον.

Η Γη είναι το σπίτι μας και χρειάζεται προστασία.
Είμαστε παιδιά αλλά θέλουμε να κάνουμε ό,τι μπορούμε. Αυτό αφορά το μέλλον μας.











They formed the 'Climate Champions Club' and prompted their classmates to join.




Alexandra, I think we all did a good job with the posters for the club.
Yes, they're super! Now, let's all come together to plan our next actions as Climate Champions.













Δημιούργησαν το σύλλογο 'Πρωταθλητές του Κλίματος' και ενθάρρυναν τους συμμαθητές τους να ενταχθούν σε αυτόν.




Αλεξάνδρα, νομίζω πως όλοι κάναμε καλή δουλειά με τις αφίσες για το σύλλογο.
Ναι, είναι super! Τώρα ας προγραμματίσουμε όλοι μαζί τις επόμενες δράσεις μας σαν Πρωταθλητές του Κλίματος.


They visited the Multi Theme Energy Park in Kimmeria, Xanthi and learnt about renewable energy sources.


Yes, it's very nice to learn about renewable energy sources.
Alexandra, isn't it very nice over here?
Επισκέφτηκαν το Πολυθεματικό Πάρκο στα Κιμμέρια Ξάνθης και έμαθαν για τις ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας.


Ναι, είναι πολύ ωραίο να μαθαίνουμε για τις ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας.
Αλεξάνδρα δεν είναι πολύ ωραία εδώ πέρα;


So far, we've seen the vertical axis wind turbine and the solar thermal park. What is that building?
That's the biomass energy center. Put on the helmet and let's go inside.




Είδαμε μέχρι τώρα την ανεμογεννήτρια κάθετου άξονα και το ηλιοθερμικό πάρκο. Αυτό το κτήριο τι είναι;
Είναι το κέντρο ενέργειας που χρησιμοποιεί βιομάζα. Φόρεσε το προστατευτικό κράνος και πάμε μέσα.


After the visit to the energy park, they wrote a letter to the mayor about environmental problems in the area and organised a City Hall rally to raise awareness.

Μετά από την επίσκεψη στο ενεργειακό πάρκο έγραψαν ένα γράμμα στον δήμαρχο για τα περιβαλλοντικά προβλήματα στην περιοχή και διοργάνωσαν μια συγκέντρωση στο Δημαρχείο για να ευαισθητοποιήσουν και άλλους.

As true climate champions, they invited their friends from Izmit and Alhandra to join their group too. They are determined to make a difference and protect the environment for everyone.


Jason, what do you think about inviting our Turkish and Portuguese
frriends to our club to do the rest of the activities together.


Ως αληθινοί πρωταθλητές του κλίματος, προσκάλεσαν τους φίλους τους από την Τουρκία και την Πορτογαλία να ενταχθούν στην ομάδα τους. Είναι αποφασισμένοι να κάνουν τη διαφορά και να προστατεύσουν το περιβάλλον για όλους.


Ιάσονα, τι θα έλεγες να προσκαλέσουμε τους φίλους μας από την Τουρκία και την Πορτογαλία στο σύλλογο μας για να κάνουμε μαζί τις υπόλοιπες δράσεις;

Part 2
by the students of 6th grade at the Edebali Ortaokulu, İzmit, Kocaeli, Türkiye





Jason and Alexandra wrote to their friends in Türkiye and Porteguese. Beril and Ata, their Turkish friends, invited them to Kocaeli to disscuss about the Climate Champions pledge.
What a good idea to invite us here dear friends!
We are happy to see you and we wanted to show you the pollution control works in our city.




Jason ve Alexandra Türkiyedeki ve Portekizdeki arkadaşlarına konuyu yazdılar. Türk arkadaşları onları İklim Şampiyonları Sözleşmesi konusunu konuşmak üzere Kocaeli'ye davet ettiler.
Ne güzel bir fikir bizi buraya davet etmeniz arkadaşlar!
Sizi burada görmekten mutluyuz ve size şehrimizde yapılan kirliliği önleme çalışmalarını göstermek istedik.


Beril and Ata took Alexandra and Jason to the coast and showed them the national Project ‘Zero Waste’ signs in different parts of the city.
Our government started a Project named 'Zero Waste' a few years ago. It aims to establish a regular, systematic and applicable basis for recycling.
All the waste is seperated and they are collected by the governmental company, İZAYDAŞ.


Beril and Ata onları sahile götürdüler ve şehrin farklı yerlerindeki 'Sıfır Atık' projesi levhalarını gösterdiler.
Devlet bir kaç yıl önce 'Sıfır Atık' adlı bir proje başlattı. Amacı, düzenli, sistemli ve uygulanabilir temelleri olan bir geridönüşüm gerçekleştirmek.
Bütün atıklar ayrıştırılır ve belediyenin şirketi olan İZAYDAŞ tarafından toplanır.
The next day, Beril, Ata, Alexandra and Jason went to İZAYDAŞ, the biggest waste recycling facility in the country.





Here, waste is transformed to electrical energy. It also has a waste water treatment plant.
I feel happy to hear this type of works.
Yes, but not enough because of the over population… Let’s go in.
Ertesi gün, Beril, Ata, Alexandra ve Jason ülkenin en büyük geridönüşüm tesisi olan İZAYDAŞ'a gittiler.




Burası İZAYDAŞ. Atık depolama ve geridönüşüm tesisi. Burada, Atıklar elektrik enerjisine dönüştürülüyor. Ayrıca, su arıtma ünitesine de sahip.
Bu çalışmaları duymak beni mutlu etti.
Evet, fakat yeterli değil, nüfus fazlalaığından dolayı... Hadi içeri girelim.



The four friends visited the small model of the facility. An officer explained the recycling procedure on the model and he showed the photos of marine control aircrafts and waste collecting ships.
Our facility recycles all types of wastes, if we can not, we burn them.
We also clean the sea, collect wastes from the ships and control the marine. All these are for a sustainable environment.

Dört arkadaş tesisin küçük bir modelini incelediler. Bir görevli model üzerinde geridönüşüm sürecini açıkladı ve liman kontrol deniz uçaklarının ve atık toplama gemilerinin fotoğraflarını gösterdi.
Tesisimiz tüm atıkları dönüştürür. Eğer geri dönüştürülemiyorsa, yakıyoruz.
Denizi de temizliyoruz, liman kontrol ve atık alım gemilerimiz var. Bütün bunlar sürdürülebilir bir çevre için.

Hadi okula gidelim, Size, 'sıfır Atık' projesi için okulda yaptıklarımızı göstermek istiyoruz.




Beril, Ata, Alexandra and Jason went to Edebali Ortaokulu. Beril and Ata told about what they did to raise awareness of sustainable environment.
This is our school. Come on!
When you wrote us the Climate Champions Pledge, we decided to write letters to the future to make everydody consider the future of the earth. We will show the letters, too.
That’s exciting!

There are some bins on each floor in the building. Some of them for paper, some of them for batteries. Men from İZAYDAŞ come once a month to get the waste and take them to the facility.


We have many paper bins because we consume paper a lot. Our friends bring both paper and batteries from home to put in them.
Let’s see the letters now.
Binanın her katında atık kutuları vardır. Bazıları kağıt için, bazıları pil için. Ayda bir gün İZAYDAŞ'tan görevliler gelir ve atıkları alıp tesise götürür.


Çok sayıda atık kutusu var çünkü çok kağıt tüketiyoruz. Arkadaşlarımız atık kutularına atmak için evden atık kağıt ve pil getiriyorlar.

Two weeks ago, there was an organization to go to the library and join a drama activity about ‘Clean Environment’. Pupils acted and, in the end, wrote a letter to the future about what they did, what they were not able to do and their hopes for a clean environment.

İki hafta önce kütüphane ziyareti organizasyonu ve 'Temiz Çevre' hakkında bir drama etkinliği vardı. Çocuklar drama etkinliğine katıldılar ve etkinliğin sonunda temiz bir çevre için neler yaptıklarını, yapamadıklarını ve umutlarını Geleceğe mektup yazarak anlattılar.

We were inspired with our partners ideas!
So, we decided to enhance this journey by showing the final results of the class school tour and the creative projects that inspired our students.
João, after this fun field trip,
we're going to do some work on the fantastic things we've seen!
We went on a field trip, on February 2nd to the MAAT" Museum of Art Architecture and Technology " to see an exhibition by Joana Vasconcelos. It was fantastic to see works of various colours, shapes and size.


What a great idea!!!!
How are we going to do it?
Fomos a uma visita de estudo, no dia 7 de fevereiro ao MAAT, "Museu de Arte Arquitetura e Tecnologia" ver uma exposição de Joana Vasconcelos. Foi fantástico observar obras de várias cores, formas e tamanhos.
João, depois desta visita de estudo tão divertida, vamos fazer um trabalho sobre as coisas fantásticas que vimos!

Como vamos fazer?


Let's present some of the materials used to make Joana Vasconcelos' exhibition!


The materials I used were cardboard and corks.
The materials I used were egg cartons, fabric and coffee capsules.


Vamos apresentar alguns dos materiais usados para fazer a exposição da Joana Vasconcelos!
Os materiais que eu usei foram: cartão e rolhas.
Os materiais que eu usei, foram, caixas de ovos, tecidos e cápsulas de café.


We remarked that the artist used 1400 whisky glasses and 110 golden alloy wheels. We got inspired and used 8 rolls of paper, aluminium foil and gold graphite. Then we made a sphere out of aluminum foil and glued it to the paper rolls.
Before we show you the result, let's give you some background information on the original work.
Observámos que a artista usou 1400 copos de uísque e 110 jantes douradas.
Inspirámo-nos e usámos 8 rolos de papel, folha de alumínio e grafite dourado.
Depois, fizemos uma esfera de papel de alumínio e colámos aos rolos de papel.


Antes de mostrarmos o resultado, vamos dar informações sobre a obra original.
