The theme of this picture book is depression. I've used animals as a metaphor for how school can seem like a jungle, with some
people being prey, and others predator. I've also used an invisibility
metaphor. Hope you like it :)

Bye sweetie
It was Jake's first day at his new high
school.
"I know you'll make lots of friends today."
his mum said encouragingly
"I know mum, see you later." Jake said
confidently.
He was very excited to make lots of new
friends, and maybe a little nervous.

hi, I'm... oh okay.

HELP

SchoolDay 1
School was like a massive zoo, there were
friendly birds, pretty horses and big
wolves.
Jake tried to introduce himself "Hi I'm... oh
okay." But nobody noticed him.
I'll talk to some people after school then,
he thought.

Hey, I'm Jake

*whisper
He tried to introduce himself again, but the
other kids ignored him.

How was your first day?
Good

"How was your first day?" asked Mum.
"Good" Jake replied, not looking at her.
He didn't want her to be disappointed that
he hadn't made any friends.

Why doesn't anybody like me?
Why doesn't anybody like me? thought
Jake.
He had said hello to many people, and tried
to fit in, but nobody had seen him.
Is there something wrong with me? Jake
thought as he went to sleep

School
Day 2
Hi
The next day he tried again, but still
nobody replied

School
Day 3

!

The next day he didn't try again. Nobody
was going to notice him anyway.
He felt invisible

School
Day 4

sigh
Jake became very sad, why should I care
about school when I don't enjoy it? he
thought.

What's the point? I can't even sleep.Why should I try when I can't do
anything right?

He also had trouble sleeping, and couldn't
seem to stop thinking how everything he
did was wrong.

Honey it's time for bed, isyour homework done?

Yeah
Unfinished homework
"Honey, it's time for bed. Is your
homework done?" Mum called.
"yeah" Jake replied.
He hadn't felt like finishing his homework,
but his mum couldn't know that, she would
just get worried and make a fuss.

SchoolDay 5

Do you know what class we have next?
go away
Jake began to get very irritated at small
things.
During his fifth day of school some
students in his class asked him where their
classroom was, and he told them to go
away.
Why should he care?

You left this in class
On his way home one day, a girl he had
never seen before came up to him and
handed him a book.
"You left this in class" she said.
Jake, feeling surprised someone had
noticed him at all, turned around to look at
her. She wasn't very pretty, in fact, she
looked a bit strange.

Can I walk with you?
"Can I walk with you?" she asked politely.
"sure" Jake replied uncertainly.
"You seem sad. Whenever I'm sad I draw
everything good that happened to me
today. You should try it." She chattered on.
Jake wasn't sure how to reply to this. It
didn't matter that he stayed quiet, she kept
chatting as they walked.

"My name's Sally by the way." She called
as she walked to her house.
Jake watched her enter, then turned to his
own house.

That night, after his mum had gone to bed,
Jake pulled out a blank book and started to
draw.
He thought of Sally, and drew her handing
him his book, and waving when they
parted. He began to smile as he thought
about seeing her tomorrow.
