Along the shores of Tampa Bay,a mama sea turtle was looking for a
place to come ashore. She needed a
place to lay her eggs. She had been
swimming for a long time, and she
was tired and heavy.
3

4
She crawled onto the beach with her flippers and pulled
herself over the sand until she found a
place where the ocean waves could
not reach her eggs. Then she started
to dig.
5

6
She dug and dug and dug. One hundredfifty baby turtle eggs had to fit
into the hole. This would be their home
until they hatched and found their way
into the ocean.
Finally, when the hole was just the
right size, she started to lay her eggs.
It took a while until all
150 of the baby turtle eggs
slipped into the sand.

7

As soon as the last turtle egg was safelyin place, Mama turtle used her flippers to
to fill the hole back up. Sand flew
everywhere as she covered the eggs
and packed the sand down all around
them
8

Because she would not be there while the the baby turtles grew and hatched, Mama turtle had to make
their nest safe from predators.
9

10
45 days later, during the late-night, early, early morning hours, the baby turtles started breaking their
way through the eggs and climbing up out of the
sand. They listened for the crashing sound of the
waves on the beach and watched for the light of the
moon bouncing off the ocean surf.
Although the seas held many predators, the baby
turtles needed to scoot down the sand away from
the animals on land that wanted to eat them. If they
could make their escape into the ocean, they would
have a chance to swim, to find food, and to survive.
11
But something other than the ocean attracted their attention and confused
them. Instead of going toward the ocean,
the baby turtles began crawling toward
the bright city lights. That was not good
for the baby turtles because they could
get squashed by a car.
12

13
As the baby turtles were still crawling towardthe city lights the next morning, a group of
elementary school students were going on a field
trip to the beach. They were riding by the turtle
beach when all of a sudden the bus driver
stomped on his brakes. The bus skidded to a stop,
and the children rushed to the windows to see
what was going on. Right then they saw a tiny
baby turtle crawling in the middle of the road.
The driver had stopped just in time to keep from
hitting the baby turtle.
