Equality Example

For the equality example, all of these students are presented with a science book that is going to teach them science. All the students seem pretty similar, so they should all be able to read and learn this text well.

While these "similar" students were given the same textbook and all read and worked the same amount. The scores were vastly different person to person. Some kids excelled and some kids heavily struggled.
Equity Example

In our equity example, all of these "similar" students have vast differences that make them more distinguishable. Some can learn better by audio, some by visual learning, and some by group work. Some were put at other disadvantages like no internet at home or trouble reading. These students are presented with the adequate tools that will help each of them succeed accordingly.

Equity Example

The students that were seen as individuals rather than a whole groups were given the adequate resources that applied to their learning. With that being said, their test scores showed as they were much better prepared because of their resources.

So what is the Difference??

Equality is thinking that everybody has the same background, strengths, weakness, etc.. it is not seeing people as diverse and different and that giving them the same resources will achieve the same outcome.

Equity is effectively recognizing the differences and disadvantages some people are put at. It is being able to distinguish these people are giving each person the adequate tools they need to succeed.
One of the main things people think about in education is giving students an equal opportunity. While this is a good thought, equality does not account for students who have been presented with disadvantages.
A better way to look at education would be from an equity point of view. This is recognizing that every student has different resources, opportunities, and needs. Like our equity example, in the classroom, looking at students as individuals will be much better for students in the short and long run.
