"Luna, you are such a lazy apprentice!" Shouted the Wicked Witch. "You have not learned any spells in all the time you have been here! All you do is play with the animals in the forest."

Poof! With a wave of her hand, the witch makes an old and worn book appear on the table.
"I am going into town for the day. You have until I get back to learn at least ten spells out of this magic book."

"If you have not learned anything upon my return, then you will be a failure of an apprentice and I will be forced to turn you into a Salamander!"

Luna was in really big trouble. She didn't want to get turned into a salamander, but she had also never been a very good reader. As she looked through the magical book she realized she couldn't read any of the spells inside. What was she going to do?

Suddenly she had a great idea! She would ask all of the animal friends she had made in the forest surrounding the Witch's house.

First Luna decided to visit her friends Bat and Spider who lived in a little cave behind the Witch's house.
"You have to look at the sounds of the letters and how they relate to each other. This will help increase your reading accuracy," said Bat.
"Yes, this will help you start to comprehend words without having to decode their meaning. This is called Automaticity," Said Spider.

Feeling a little more confident, Luna decided to visit the enchanted forest to talk to her friends Deer and Bear.
"Next you should work on how certain sounds of words are used. How are words said when they are read aloud? Is the person excited or sad when they say the word? How words are expressed is called prosody," advised Bear.
"It is also important to slow down when you read. I know you like to rush through tasks to get them done as quickly as possible, but it is important to work on your reading tempo. You don't want to read too fast or slow you need to read at the perfect pace for you to comprehend what you are reading," added Deer.

Luna felt like she was close to understanding the spells in the book, but she still felt like she needed some help putting all the advice she had been given together. So she visited her friend Fish who lived at the river.
"You need to practice what you have learned in order to improve your comprehension or understanding," said Fish. "One way to help you understand the words is to act them out, kinda like a play. This is called Reader's Theatre."

As she was putting the advice from Fish to the test, the three Monkey brothers showed up to watch her practice.
"You should try reading out loud in a group to improve your reading comprehension, this is called Choral Reading," they said. "Come on we will help you, we will help you!"
