Once upon a time, in a far, faraway country called Serbia, there  lived a despot whose name was Djuradj Brankovic and whose father was infamous Vuk Brankovic.

He married a Greek royal lady whose name was Irina Kantakuzin, but people much rather called her Jerina the Cursed.

The times were hard for the Serbian people then. They were afraid of Turkish soldiers who wanted to conquer Serbia.

In order to defend their people, Serbian rulers built towns and fortresses on high and not easy-to-get-to hills. 

One day, Djuradj and Jerina decided to build such a town on the west side of mountain Kopaonik. They named it Koznik, but people called it Jerina's Town.

It was named Koznik (the goats' town) because Jerina ordered people that everyone, including pregnant women, must carry big, heavy rocks for the town up the steep and dangerous hill's sides, and to use all kinds of animals for this purpose as well. 

The goats were used the most.

As much as people were afraid of the Turks, they were afraid of Jerina, too. She was believed to be a selfish, cruel and merciless ruler and as such presented in many stories and poems. 

In these stories, she used to seduce young Serbian soldiers and after a night spent with them, she would order for them to be thrown from the highest fortress in river Rasina, to be killed by the fall or drown in the strong river.

When she once wished for a big pool to swim in, the soldiers had to build a dam on river Rasina to make a huge lake for her to enjoy.

She was also believed to have wings - she would fly from her fortress down to the river whenever she wanted to swim, while people were starving and fighting for their lives at the same time.
