Once upon a time,
there was a girl.
A quiet girl.

A girl so quiet that
no one even knew she was there...

...but she was there.
She was always there,
in her own little world,
in her own little head.

One day, as the girl was out in
the field picking flowers, she felt
that she was being watched.
Now, this was very strange
because no one had ever watched
her.
In fact, no one had ever seen her.

This was because
she was so quiet,
that no one ever knew
she was even there!

Feeling afraid,
the girl stopped picking flowers.
She stood up and looked around,
and there high up on a tree,
she spotted a tiny, brown thing.
It was a little bird!
It was sitting
on a little branch,
looking right back at her.

She gasped.
The little bird continued to watch her, this
time with some amusement.

"Hello, little girl!" the bird chirped.
The little girl stared in disbelief.
"You're talking!" she exclaimed.
"Of course, I'm talking.
I'm talking to you!"
the bird replied.

"Wha..wha..what did you say?"
"I said, 'Hello!' Who are you?"
"I'm a little girl."
"I can see that. I want to know what your
name is. What do people call you?"

"I... I don't know. People don't call me
anything. I don't think I have a name." said
the little girl, a little sadly.
The bird was astonished.
"You don't have a name?! Well! We must fix
that at once!"

"Let's give you a name, shall we?
What name would you like, little girl?"
"Can it be beautiful?"
"Beautiful?
That's a silly name to have! Beauty is
only skin deep, have you not heard? It
does not last long either. Shall we think
of a better name?"

"How about Princess?"
"Ha!" the bird scoffed, "You
have to be more original than
that, little girl! I never knew a
princess who was strong, and
lasted longer than a fairy tale!
Let's try again."

The girl agreed. The bird was right.
No one knew what happened to the princesses
after the stories had ended.
She wanted to last much, much longer than
simply happily ever after.

So, she sat down,
and with her head in her hands,
she started to think long and hard
about her name.
The little bird waited patiently, and
hopped onto her shoulders.
