Me, Ms. Maddie
My mentee, Ms. Coles

Ms. Coles got a new job with us at the Children of the Night Shelter,
and only had one week to get to know the classroom before the
lead teacher, Ms. Ventura, went on a three-week vacation.

I did some thinking that night about
mentoring Ms. Coles. I wanted to help
her feel more in control in the classroom,
and decided to talk with her the next day at
lunch about how I might be able to help.

Working with the kids has been okay, but I'm having such a difficult time figuring out how
to keep track of everyone's work, their progress,
and I'm a little lost when it comes to making sure
they're doing the right assignments. If only Ms. Ventura
had a better system of keeping track of everything. Maybe
I could create some files or a binder for each student.
Ms. Maddie could you help me with that?

Of course I can help you,and I have an idea: instead
of making paper files for each
student and each class, what
about doing something on the
computer? I would be happy to
help you get started.
Yes! That sounds great!Although I was hoping to do something student-related for the mentoring
project, I felt supporting Ms. Coles was a more urgent need.

Week 1: Planning Together
I sat down with Ms. Coles the following Tuesday to
begin planning what the classroom database would
need to include. I jotted down a few ideas to get her
started before school began that day, and we agreed
to continue later by using a shared document online.

The Plans

Week 2: Picking A Program
After working out a plan together, I began to do
some research on software that would offer Ms.
Coles the tools she would need. I shared three of
those programs with Ms. Coles.

Ms. Coles is a fast learner.
I'll show her a variety of
programs with different levels of
complexity, and let her choose.

Ms. Coles was very excited, and did some research
of her own.

I kept checking in with Ms. Coles to find out which program she would
like to try using in the classroom.
I'll look at the programs a little more tonight, but if you could help me learn it, I like the idea of
making a customized database in Access.

I'd be happy to show you ! I noticed you're quite good with technology. I taught myself how to
use Access last year, and I can show you what I
know and where to learn more.

Sounds good! :)
Ms. Coles was leaning toward the more advanced program,
which would involve
customizing our own
database.
