“Whoosh!” It was cold and wet I glanced outside of the
cave I lived in and sniffed the cold Taiga breeze. I glanced
back into the cold dark cave. I saw every wolf in my pack
fast asleep. I snuck outside to see if there was any food I
could get an early start to hunt, before any of the other
predators. Nothing, just cold and darkness. I grabbed
some firewood and started a fire in the cold dark cave. I
waited a bit longer and then howled to wake up my pack.

When they awoke, we set out to hunt in the cloudy
Taiga. There were 7 hunting groups of 3, so we had 21
in all. The rest of the wolves were back at the cave
guarding. As we were walking, my greatest fear came
true. Hunters, we heard gunshots louder than 20
elephants. I ran as fast as a bullet train. I howled to
signal my pack. They turned and ran back, I did a head
count at the cave, we were missing one.

I ran into the deep taiga ice. I looked from side
to side. I ran and howled listening for a
response. Then I heard a distant howl. I ran
through the snow I saw the wolf I called out to
her. Her voice was a soft butterfly. She howled
back she was ok! I carried her back to the cave
and bandaged her. We needed to stop this we
needed a plan.

I devised a plan with my pack. There aren’t
many trees in the taiga so we or many trees at
plants at all, so there was really no where for
the hunters to hide. That gave me an idea.
There was a huge lake down by the valley, so if
we circled the hunters and forced them in they
would freeze from hypothermia! It was at go!
The wolves and I circled the hunters, they held
their guns tight but we were faster. I jumped up
and grabbed one of the hunter’s guns. I threw it
in the lake. We made them back up until they
were standing on a rug next to a steep slope.

We yanked the rug and they went tumbling
down into the river. Then it started raining
cats and dogs. I ran back to the cave and my
pack followed. That night, when I looked up at
the moon and the stars that the taiga always
had and swore that they all smiled back at me.

The next morning when I went hunting, I enjoyed
the wonderful silence, so silent, so quiet, and so
perfect! No gunshots, no howling alert dogs, just
peace. Then it started to rain typical taiga, I
thought then I turned and sprinted through the
thorough thick thunderous thunder I called home.
When I was lying there safe in my cave, my
home I realized I had everything I ever wanted
all along. This whole hunter thing was just a
setback, to my amazing, beautiful, wonderful,
home in the taiga.
