This is the story about Ceres, Goddess of Agriculture and her daugher Proserpina.
In Ancient times, it had always summer time on Earth. Plants were always green all year.
This was so because Ceres, Goddess of Agriculture left Olympus to live on Earth.
Proserpina was happy and spent her time singing and picking flowers to her mother.
She liked so muh playing with her friends near the river.
One night, Proserpina did not come home and Ceres spent the night waiting for her. The next morning, she went out to look for her.
Ceres asked her daughter' s friends and they told her that she went to the river to look for special flowers .
Ceres went to the river to look for her dasughter but only found her belt. She swore she wouldn' t rest until she found her.
Ceres, angry at not finding her daughter punished the Earth to live in an eternal winter.
Ceres went to Olympus and asked Zeus about her daughter.
Zeus knew what happened but preferred that she asked Cupid.
Cupid said that was an earthquake and Pluto come to the surface. He shot him an arrow of love and fell love with Proserpina. He took her to the underworld with him.
Ceres was angry with Cupido, and Venus admitted her fault.
Ceres asked Zeus to help Proserpina return to her.
Zeus sent the goddess Flora to the Underworld so that she could bring Proserpina.
Goddess Flora asked about Proserpina who
was married with God Pluto and they were
very happy living in the Underworld.
Pluto said Flora that Proserpina drunk fruit juice so she couldn 't return with her
mother.
To drink fruit juice was no reason to be in Underworld.
Proserpina decided to live six months with her mother Ceres and six months with her husband Pluto.
God Pluto accepted Proserpina' s decision and goddess Flora and Proserpina return to Olympus to tell it to Zeus and Ceres.
Zeus and Ceres accepted Proserpina's decision.
But Ceres proposed a condition that could not be changed.
Cere's condition was very simple:
While Proserpina lived with her, Spring would be with them.
But when she lived with Pluto, winter would be on Earth.
Spring shows the joy of the goddess Ceres in living together with her daughter.
However, winter shows the sadness of her loneliness.
