According to the U.S, Department of education, only 1% of students
who receives special education services are in gifted education
programs, compared to 7% of general education students.
According to Julia Osborne, Director of Accelerated and Gifted
Education for GCPS, of Gwinnett's 170,000 plus students, only 350 are
receiving services for both giftedness and some type of disability.
Too often, the disability masks the giftedness or the giftedness masks
the disability. These rare students who are identified and served in both
areas are called "twice exceptional," or 2e.
This is a story about three such students.

Once upon a time there were three really
exceptional pigs. So exceptional, in fact, that they
were often called "twice exceptional" or 2e pigs.
2eees! Supper time!

This is Gus Green-Pig. He's a "probie." When he was two, he
memorized the periodic table and did differential calculus.
However, as an 8th grader, he struggles daily with organization,
focus, and time management. In fact, he stays frustrated most
of the time as do his teachers. Sadly, he's on a POI.
Where's my hat?

This is Rupert Red-Pig. His mother knows in her heart that
he's just as smart as Gus. In fact, when he was two, he
built a mini nuclear reactor (but he couldn't get any
plutonium). Rupert has been diagnosed with a learning
disability. While he uses words like "triskaidekaphobia"
and "syzygy," he fails every spelling test and won't even
attempt essay writing. He spends each day with a
resource teacher. He struggles to stay awake because
he's bored out of his porcine mind.
I'm fatigued.

This is Bubba Blue-Pig. His mom thinks he's pretty
smart, too. However, he doesn't say much. He doesn't
hang out with other kids--never has. In fact, when he
was two, he took all the Legos and built a miniature
Sistine Chapel to hide in to get away from the other
kids. His teachers think he's just "quirky," but are not
concerned because he's passing all of his classes and
has always exceeded on the CRCT.
Leave me alone.

The pigs all attend the Little Red Schoolhouse. Gus's
teacher is Mrs. Clueless. She always berates Gus for
leaving his assignments at home. She tells him he is
lazy and needs to try harder. Other students laugh at
him for always getting reprimanded.

Rupert's teacher doesn't understand why he is bored.
She gives him her best skill and drill worksheets to help
with his spelling deficits. Meanwhile, he dreams of
attending GSMST and later, MIT. On the weekends, he
volunteers at Georgia Tech tutoring in the physics lab.

Bubba just wants to be alone with his thoughts and his building supplies.
He has been tested for gifted because of his above-average CoGAT scores,
but because he has had several C's he hasn't gotten in (those darn oral
reports and group activities get him every time). His mother was told he
"lacks motivation." Also, the teachers don't see him as creative because he
just doesn't say much about all the big ideas in his head. In the meantime,
Bubba just sits in class and spins his pencil all.day.long.

One day, Wally Lone Wolfe was transferred
from the county office to make some changes
at the Little Red Schoolhouse.
