The Salmon of Knowlege
Long ago in Ireland, there was a wise old poet named Finnegas who lived beside the River Boyne. He spent many years trying to catch a very special fish called the Salmon of Knowledge.
It was said that whoever ate this salmon would become the wisest person in the world!
One day, a young boy named Fionn came to live with Finnegas to learn from him. Fionn helped the old poet with his work and listened to his stories.
One morning, Finnegas finally caught the Salmon of Knowledge! He was so excited. He told Fionn to cook the fish carefully but warned him,
“Do not eat even one bite!”

Fionn roasted the salmon, but when he touched it to see if it was done, a drop of hot fish oil splashed onto his thumb. Without thinking, Fionn put his thumb in his mouth to cool it.
When Finnegas saw Fionn’s face, he knew at once what had happened.
“The knowledge is yours now, Fionn,” he said kindly.
From that day on, Fionn became the wisest boy in Ireland. He later grew up to be the great hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna.

“Giovannino Perdigiorno” – Gianni Rodari
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Giovannino Perdigiorno.
He was a great traveller: he had visited every country in the world, and even some that are not on the map. Once he arrived in the Land of Sugar Men: they were sweet and kind, buta little rain was enough to melt them like candy. Another time he happened upon the Land of Rubber Men, where everyone bounced happily: no one ever got hurt, but they could neverstand still. Then he visited the Land of Paper Men, who were so light that the wind blew them away, and the Land of Soap Men, who made bubbles when they spoke. Finally, he arrived in the Land of Stone Men: they were strong and hard, but so rigid that they could not even hug each other.
Giovannino realised that in every country there was something beautiful, but also something missing. So he resumed his journey, determined to find a country where people were
neither made of sugar, nor rubber, nor stone...A country where you could laugh, think, hug and dream. And perhaps, who knows, he really did find it.

Giovanni Perdigiorno is a famous story in Italy, written by an important children's writer, Gianni Rodari. The adventures of Giovanni Perdigiorno are a symbolic journey through the imagination that, although it does not have a single moral lesson, conveys values such as curiosity, the search for knowledge and the importance of personal development.
The story of the two mermaids
Once upon a time a boat crashed on the reefs. Some monks working there found it destroyed with a lot of blood and corpses on the deck, but the hold was full of wealth such as gold, silver, jewels, precious woods... They met a young crewman starving which was the only survivor. He told them the story of his adventure on this boat.
"The ship was sailing on the Mediterranean sea for several years, full of precious merchandise. It tried to reach is native village, near Nice in the south France. Suddenly a huge storm was coming and the captain and his boat got lost. For months the crew explored unknown countries and islands to get fresh food and find their way back home.

One morning, the watchman said he saw two big fishes around the bow.
The sailors decided to catch them and then realized it wasn't two fish but two mermaids ! They put them in a tank on the deck.
The next days, the mermaids stayed still, didn't talk nor complain. But the sailors started to come and talk with the mermaids every night. The captain was jealous and decided to post a guard to keep them for himself, but he was disarmed at night, and the captain was killed. The mermaid took advantage of the situation to plan their escape.
In the afternoon, men were only drinking and didn't govern the ship. At sunset, they started fighting and killing each other. The mermaids started singing and soon there was a great silence.
I was hiding behind a box and saw the mermaids suddenly jumping out of the tank and dive into the sea. At sunrise, I was the only one staying alive..."
The monks saw the young sailor starting to cry.... and asked him the reason why. He explained that just before jumping into the sea, the youngest mermaid looked at him and since then he has fallen in love and could never forget her !

The Legend of Catherine Ségurane
Catherine Ségurane was a brave washerwoman. Every day, she washed clothes in the river. One morning 120 galleys appeared on the sea. The terrible pirate Barbarossa came to attack Nice with his soldiers.
The inhabitants were terrified, for the invaders wanted to seize the Castle of Nice. But Catherine was not afraid! She grabbed her laundry beater and ran to the ramparts to defend her city. She struck the soldiers with her beater, then snatched the flag from Barbarossa’s hands before throwing the banner into the sea. Seeing her bravery, the townspeople decided to fight by her side.

As a cannonball flew toward her, Catherine lifted her skirt and stopped it! The townspeople believed it was a miracle and regained their courage. Then Catherine showed her bottom to the enemies while letting out a wild cry! The pirates, shocked and frightened, fled at once toward the sea.
Thanks to Catherine, Nice was saved.
Since that day, she has become the heroine of the city.
Today, a street and a middle school bear her name, and a bas-relief can be seen on the last wall of the old ramparts — at the very spot where she made the enemy flee.

Tower of Hercules
The construction of this lighthouse is linked to a variety of legends and stories that have been passed down through the centuries. The best-known are those related to Hercules, whose name has been given to the Tower. It was Alfonso X the Wise who in the 13th century passed along the ancient myths of Hercules. After three days of battle, Hercules defeated the giant Geryon who had subjugated the people. After burying the severed head of his enemy, the hero declared that a tower should be built on that spot and a city established.
This city should be named Crunia, in honor of the first woman who had lived in the location. Her nephew Espán, after being named as lord of Spain, began to construct the Lighthouse Tower, providing it with an oil lamp with a flame that could never be extinguished.

THE ORIGIN OF THE GRAZ CASTLE
AND CALVARY HILL
Once upon a time, many people gathered on the Schöckel and talked about the beauty and wonders of the magnificent green Styrian countryside. A gamekeeper's assistant dressed in green, who had approached unnoticed and listened for a while, laughed and said: ‘You love your land, your Schöckel, but it is only a dwarf compared to the great Rigi in Switzerland. If you like, I will erect three cones like the Schöckel here within 24 hours, but the first person to climb this triple-whitewashed rock must belong to me.’

The honest country folk thought the stranger was a braggart who was just trying to make fun of them, and jokingly agreed to his strange request. Suddenly, a black cloud rose before their eyes on the distant horizon, climbing higher and higher with tremendous speed and soon covering the Schöckel and the entire Mur Valley. Lightning flashed through the air, violent thunderclaps rumbled, and a terrible storm arose and tore the cloud in two. The hunter's figure grew longer and longer, rising higher and higher into the air, accompanied by numerous flashes of lightning, and flew southwards, whizzing and sparking.

The green hunter was none other than the devil. He hurried to Africa, where he shook the monstrous Moon Mountains with the terrible force of all his hellish powers, broke off a huge mass of rock and loaded it onto his back. Then he turned back and raced back to Styria. As the devil flew over Wildon, a procession was passing through the valley below; it was Easter week. The prince of hell remembered that he had no power during this holy time. He hurled the rock from his shoulder down onto the Mur Valley with such force that it split into two pieces; which rolled towards the Mur and came to rest on its banks. The larger of the two is now Schloßberg, and the smaller is Kalvarienberg. But the devil, furious at the failure of his efforts, dug a large hole in the Schöckel and drove through it into hell.

The Legend of the Seven Springs
On the island of Rhodes, Greece, there is an area called Seven Springs. According to the legend, in this area, amidst a forest, lived seven nymphs (immortal fairies in greek mythology) who protected the seven springs. They danced beside the river, and their laughter could be heard throughout the island.
One day, a mortally wounded knight arrived in the forest and sat by a tree next to the river, ready to die. Then, a beautiful, tall, blonde woman appeared before him. She told him her name was Kalisti and helped him reach a narrow and dark tunnel. She explained that if he managed to cross it to the end without getting scared and turning back, he would be saved. The knight entered the dark passage and crossed it without turning back!

As he reached the end, he emerged into a large clearing where there was a lake and seven springs. There, he saw seven beautiful women dancing, among them Kalisti. They gave him water from the springs to drink, and he immediately fell asleep! When he awoke, he was under the tree where he had first lain down, his wound healed, and he was saved! However, he remembered nothing of what he had experienced.
When the Italians occupied the island of Rhodes, they built a narrow tunnel that carries water at that spot. Even today, the legend says that if you walk barefoot through the tunnel, you will emerge rejuvenated!

In the 14th century, a few years after the conquest of Rhodes by the Knights, and while they had transformed the city into one of the most heavily fortified in Europe, the enemy was from within!
A beast on the rocks above the city was devouring shepherds and pilgrims. The beast was shaped like a large horse, it was ferocious, its head looked like a snake, its breath burned like fire and it had huge teeth. It had hard scaly skin and two membranous wings!
It was called “The Dragon of Rhodes”. It hid on the slope of the hill of Agios Stefanos and the pilgrimage to the chapel of Agios Stefanos, on the hill above its nest, was particularly dangerous. For this reason, the point where it nested was called “Mall Passo”, that is, “Bad Passage” and was in today’s Monte Smith. No one dared to face it and all the Knights who tried to exterminate it failed.
Grand Master Villeneuve, by decree, forbade anyone to pass through this passage or attempt to confront it. No one dared to approach it anymore except the young knight De Gozon.
The legend of the dragon of Rhodes

The knight asked for a year's leave, retired to his father's castle in France, asked for and had an effigy of the Dragon made for him and, together with his dogs and horse, trained to exterminate it.
De Gozon, returning to Rhodes, managed to kill the dragon, at the risk of his life. From then on, the “Bad Pass” was called “Bell Passo” meaning Good Passage.
But the young knight had defied the order. Although his victorious return was followed by celebrations from the crowd, who urged him to be rewarded for his heroic deed, the Grand Master punished him. But he became a hero to the people! The crowd pressed and he was eventually pardoned and promoted to viceroy of the island.
De Gozon succeeded Villeneuve when he died and became Grand Master. Today, the courageous Knight's tombstone survives in the Cluny Museum in France, where he is inscribed as "The Dragon Slayer."
