My first cross-cultural experience was in Matamoros, Mexico. I
went the summer after my eighth grade year with my youth-group
from Christ Community Church. Although this was a fun experience,
I was not in a place spiritually where to comprehend or absorb what
this trip had the potential to offer me. I went because my friends did
and thought it would be a fun adventure.
Our trip did good in the village of Matamoros, but I think we did
some harm as well. Since Mexico became dangerous, our church
never went back to this location or continued the relationship.
However we did love on the villagers, pray boldly for them, and build
two very much needed houses for members of the local churches
congregation.
- Prayer walks
- Construction
- VBS

Visiting other cultures and experiencing the differences their
differences compared to mine such as: environment, poverty (or
in some areas wealth), and living conditions has greatly affected
the way I view the world. However, I would say that the locals
and people of the villages I have done missions work in have had
a far greater impact in my life than anything else.
I am astounded by their open hearts, genuine joy, generosity
and hospitality even though they have so little.
Through these trips, I have learned the right and wrong way to
do missions. I still have a lot to learn, but ultimately know that
part of our higher calling as Christians is to bring the gospel to
and love on the least of these.

Guatemala: See Cork Board
- Constructed stairway alongside locals
- Visited schools and houses
- Made bread with locals
- Served nutritional drink alongside teachers
- Vacation Bible School outreach
- Spending time with kids: Soccer, parachute, hair braiding,
"Pato, Pato, Ganzo".
- Movie Night, watched Incredibles in Spanish
- Teaching English words, learning Spanish ones

Going to Guatemala changed my life. I can say this because I
was finally at a place in my life where I was open to God's
voice and spiritually mature.
Not only did God break my heart for the people of the village
I stayed in, but He also instilled in me a passion for missions
work and the knowledge that short terms missions trips can
truly open ones eyes. I believe with all my heart that getting
out of your comfort zone and serving is crucial for teens to
understand the bigger picture of life and also to understand
God better.
Getting away from technology, time, mirrors, and comfort did
more for me in one and a half weeks that I can explain.

Dominican Republic: See Cork Board
- Construction alongside local/national church
- -> moving cinder blocks, dirt, digging holes for foundation of
new church buildings, re-bar, painting
- Cafe Ministry helped locals learn english, and gospel outreach
through internet cafe in Santiago
- Baseball Outreach played with local little league teams
- Vacation Bible School Outreach crafts, bible lesson, skits,
songs, and sharing testimonies.
- Learning about mission work from local missionaries
- Prayer Walks

Going to the Dominican Republic was an awesome
experience for me. The trip really confirmed in me my call to
ministry and gave me a great leadership position, learning how
to effectively help plan and lead a missions trip.
It was a much different experience than the past two
missions trips because of the fact that we worked much more
alongside an established mission organization, and national
church.
It was a learning, and serving experience alongside my youth
group that I will not soon forget.
