Once upon a time
there lived a rich prince named
Jack and his mother. They
owned a grand castle at the top
of a grand hill, with grand
gardens and there they lived a
grand life.

The only problem was that the prince was
very greedy. He wanted to have the best and
be the best, buy the best and sell the best and
even eat the best and drink the best.
The prince had worked all of his life to
insure that this be true of himself and his
mother, but through all of his journeys and
all of his strife there was one problem that
the prince could not fix.

He was stalky, and stalky princes
would make stalky kings,
and stalky kings were NOT the best.

So the prince called all of his servants and
subjects to his castle one afternoon and told
them,
"My people. For years you have watched
as I have made this kingdom THE best, now
it is your turn to return the favour!"
At this many people shook their heads and
began to leave, as everyone knew the prince
has done no such thing, and only made life
better for himself.

"There will be great reward for whoever is
able to complete this task!", cried the prince.
Heads stopped shaking, feet stopped
walking, the prince had the interest of the
entire kingdom.
"As you all know, in just a few months I
will be taking my rightful place as your king.
And it is my dearest wish that before that day
comes, I will become a strong and dashing
man.

"Now, i order each of you, search the
kingdom and find a way for this to become
true!"
"Trade all that you have to better you
future king, and you will be rewarded with
any material thing you ask for!"

The people cheered and rushed through the
kingdom to find such a cure. But one remained in
the castle, Goose, a young and beautiful woman who
lived in the kingdom.
"My prince!” she called as her eyes lit up like
golden eggs, "My dear prince, I have nothing left to
give to trade for such things! Is there nothing I can
do?" The ignorant prince did not even look at her
but walked away laughing at her misfortune.

Over the next weeks hundreds of ideas
we're presented to the prince, at great
sacrifices to their presenters.
"It's a Bowflex my Lord", one explained "I
traded my youngest daughter for it. All it
takes is fifteen minutes a day for visible
results in just one month!"
"Far too much work" Thought the prince,
again arrogant of the strife of his subject,
"NEXT!"

"For you my Lord, I present a
protein shake!", explained
another.
"NEXT!!!"

For days it went on this way until finally
an old witch staggered up to the castle door
and shuffled towards the royal throne.
"I have a solution for you” she sneered,
“all you have to do my liege, is eat what I
hold in my hand. What’s more dear child”
continued the wench, “I ask for nothing in
return!”

This caught the interest of the prince, and
he waved her forwards. With a deep
toothless grin she reached out her knobbed
hand and mesmerized the prince extended
his well-manicured fingers. Into the soft
palm fell three small green beans.
The prince grew furious, “LIAR! YOU OLD
COW!!” he cried, “you deceive your prince,
and for that you will be banished”. With that
the guards came forwards and carried the
witch away.

Exhausted from his day
in the courts the prince returned to his
chambers.
Upon arriving in his bed
the prince realized that in his rage
he had kept the beans clenched in his fist.
Sighing, he popped
all three of them into his mouth
and fell asleep.

As dusk began to break a great crashing
could be heard throughout the kingdom. All
of the villagers ran out to the streets and
look towards the prince’s castle, and there
they saw a new mountain silhouetted by the
rising sun.
Much to the astonishment of the folk, the
mountain seemed to be moving! And indeed
it was. As the sun rose higher the ‘mountain’
became clearer and clearer.

The black outline
became
red cloaks,
brown hair,
four limbs
and a
gigantic
frown.

The prince had shot up like a beanstalk
overnight.
It seemed that as the transformation took
place the prince had the good wit to spring
through his window to avoid ruining his
beautiful chamber in his growth.
Sadly he had moved slightly too slowly and
one foot grew to such a size that it could no
longer fit through.

The prince was stuck
sitting in his grand clothes, on his
grand hill, with one grand foot in his
grand castle.
