This book is dedicated to the people in the first Thanksgiving!

We traveled across the ocean blue...
Hoping to find something new!

NO LONGER COMMON LAND
WHAT?!
We lost our land due to the enclosure movement*
So a lot of us moved for self-improvement
Enclosure Movement*- where small farmers had their land taken and commons lands were fenced off that were previously open to all.

We Were the Virginians!
We came for gold
John smith* was bold
He kept us alive
With our plantations* we thrived!
*John Smith- after a tough time for the Virginians, John Smith led the people to success with high work expectations
*Plantations- a big farm that was filled with a lot of workers under the control of a single owner

We heard of the colony, Roanoke*
And we hoped it was only a joke
HKSPO
Roanoke*- A town where Virginian settlers came to and where previous settlers had already disappeared. The previous settlers made a mark on a tree that still has not been discovered of its true meaning today.
We sailed with the Virginia Company*
Before long, our people grew to so many!

Virginia Company*- company was approved by James 1 in 1606 to colonize what would become Virginia. They promised liberty to all colonists.

The headright system* gave us land
Women without husbands had dower rights* which would later expand

Headright System*- The Virginia Company gave 50 acres of land to anyone who paid for their own passage or another persons passage to Virginia. Dower Rights*- Married women had the right to claim a part of their husbands land if they were to pass on so that women had a chance to be successful

The House of Burgesses* was created
1619 when it was dated
We Were the Virginians!

House of Burgesses*- the first voted representatives gathering in the colonies

We traveled across the ocean blue,
Hoping to find something new!

We were the Puritans*!
We hoped to purify
Against anything pope-like we’d unify!

Stop the Pope!
Puritans*- a Christian religious group who was against Catholicism and wanted to purify the Church.

We came during the Great Migration*
and we believed in God's creation
Great Migration*- when a lot of Puritan people moved to the colonies during the 1930s

We followed John Winthrop’s* teachings
He governed Massachusetts' people and things
John Winthrop*- the Massachusetts governor who was a Puritan that preached about freedom
He taught us a moral liberty
Where certain people would rule society
We were the Puritans!

"Moral" liberty meant "a liberty to that only which is good"
