John has 3 cats: Sam, Tom and George

John feeds them on Cat Crunchies. Each day Sam eats ! 1/2 of the box, Tom eats ! 1/8 of the box and George eats ! 1/4 of the box. What fraction of a whole box do the cats eat, in all, each day?

Solution: 1/2 + 1/4 +1/8 = 4/8 +2/8 +1/8 =7/8

Correct answer is 7/8

Friends at a Restaurant

4 friends are buying food in a restaurant,

together they pay 60 euros.

Leila ate 1/5

Sebastian ate 1/3

Jacob ate 1/4

How should they pay individually?

Solution: 60:5=12 60:3=20 60:4=15 12+20+15=47 60-47=13

IN POKER

In a game of Texas Hold'em poker, you are dealt two cards (known as "hole cards") from a standard 52-card deck. You are holding the Ace of Hearts and the King of Hearts. You want to calculate the probability of winning the hand given that you have these two specific cards.

Winning by making a pair or better with your hole cards:

There are 50 cards remaining in the deck after your two hole cards are dealt.

To make a pair with your Ace or King, you need one of the remaining three Aces or three Kings to appear on the board.

The probability of this happening on the flop (the first three community cards) is: 650 506 (3 Aces + 3 Kings out of 50 cards).

Therefore, the total probability of making a pair or better with your hole cards is:

P(Pair or Better)=1−(1−506)×(1−476)≈0.2565

John has 60 marbles. He wants to distribute these marbles to his 3 cousins in proportion to their ages. His cousins are 5, 7 and 8 years old. How many marbles will the youngest cousin gets?

Solution:

5x + 7x + 8x = 60

20x = 60

x = 3

5.3 = 15

Youngest cousin gets 15 marbles

In a grocery:

1 kg orange costs 40TRY sells 60TRY

1 kg watermelon costs x sells 75TRY

If grocery sells 2kg watermelon and 5kg orange, he

profits %50. What is x?

Solution:

300 + 3x = (75 x 2) + (60 x 5)

3x = 150

x=50

A farmer is growing tomatoes and peppers in his field.

The price of tomato seeds is 3TRY per kilogram, while

the price of pepper seeds is 5TRY per kilogram. The

farmer spent 525TRY to buy seeds. If he has grown a

total of 125 kilograms of tomatoes and peppers in his

field, find out how many kilograms of tomatoes and

how many kilograms of peppers he has grown.

Solution:

x kilos (tomato) + y kilos (pepper) = 125 kilos

The pages of a 25-leaf notebook are numbered from 1 to 50,

front and back. When two consecutive pages of the notebook

are torn, the sum of the numbers of the remaining pages

becomes 1161. Accordingly, what is the smallest number of

pages in the torn pages?

Solution:

1+2...49+50 = 50.50/2 x+(x+1)+(x+2)+(x+3)

50.50 / 2 = 1275 = 4x + 6

4x+6=1275-1161

x = 27

In a quiz competition, contestants receive 4 points for each correct answer and lose 1 point for each wrong answer.

How many wrong questions answered by a contestant who answered 40 questions and received 110 points?

Correct —> x

Wrong —> 40-x

• 4x - 1 (40 - x) = 110

• 4x - 40 + x=110

• 5x = 150

• x = 30

Wrong answers: 40-30 = 10
