Introduction
In an alternate universe in 1950, there was a strange guy named Sol. He tried to fit in, like everyone else, but everywhere he went, he heard the same thing, "Get out of here you freak!" It made him upset that humans were constantly rude to him. It was like they didn't understand that he was a person too. One day, he saw a man walking by. He was curious, so he decided to follow him. The man walked into an apartment building. Sol followed cautiously.
Worried that someone might spot him, he stayed out of sight. He saw a glimpse of the man's ID card. There was a name on it "Francis Mosses" along with a picture of his face. The man turned towards where Sol was standing, but he ducked out of the way just in time. Sol began walking back to his makeshift house, repeating the name over and over in his mind, Francis Mosses, Francis Mosses. Is it pronounced Moses or Moss-es? Francis Moss-es? Francis Moses? I know it's spelled Mosses, but that doesn't mean it's pronounced that way... hm... he got back to his makeshift house and lay down on an old mattress he found. He repeated the name to himself once more and went to sleep.
Chapter 1: 5 years later
"Oy, Sol! Get your ass outta bed!" A voice shouted at him, jolting him awake... and making him fall of his bed and onto the floor "Holy shit! What is wrong with you? Like what the frick Lynx! It's rude to wake someone up like that!" Sol exclaimed angrily. "Well so-rry Mr. Perfect Sleep Schedule!" Lynx responded sassily. "Training starts in 15 minutes and the rest of us woke up an hour ago to get ready. Second, I must've really upset you if you're this mad. You're the most well mannered person I know!" "I know, I'm sorry pal, it's just been a lot lately with all the training and tests lately..." Sol sighed. "Should I go to sleep earlier?"
"Why did you wait until now to ask that question?" Lynx sighed, rolling their eyes. "You've been sleeping bad for weeks bud!" "Yeah, yeah, shoulda asked ya sooner shouldn't I?" Sol asked, while simultaneously trying to keep the exhaustion off his face. Lynx saw his exhaustion, gave him a sympathetic look took him by the arm. "Come on, let's go get you some coffee or sumthin'." Lynx said. They walked down to the cafeteria where everyone else was eating and sat down. Lynx told Sol to wait there and that they'd be back with some coffee and a bagel with some cream cheese. Lynx came back and gave Sol the bagel and coffee. "Thank you Lynx." Sol said groggily. "That's what friends are for." Lynx responded. "Careful, the coffee's still hot."
Sol ate the bagel, blew on the coffee and drank it. After a few minutes, one of the people who ran the program came in. "Listen up! All of you need to come to the meeting room in 5 minutes! There, I along with a few others, will explain what you're here to do." A commander in a camo suit marched around the tables shouting in a serious tone. "Once your done eating, go to the meeting room. If you're not, that's too damn bad! Understood?" "Yes Ma'am!" all the people in the room shouted in sync. "At ease." the commander said, exiting the room. everyone who hadn't finished their meals quickly finished them and everyone headed to the meeting room. "I wonder what the meeting's about." Sol mused. "I dunno, but whatever it is, it must be pretty important." Lynx responded. They walked into the large meeting room and sat down.
Over the course of an hour, they listened to the speech about how the humans called them "Doppelgangers" due to their ability to shapeshift and change their voices. They explained that the ones who didn't get enough training wouldn't be sent out, since the new doorman -of the apartment building the trained doppelgangers were being sent to- has good vision and will notice if even the slightest detail is off. The presenters doing the speech also explained that some of the fake ID cards and Entry Requests were messed up and they had to improvise if the ID or Entry Request they got was off. Then the presenters told them to go to the entryway to receive their documents and get a quick summary of the mission. Sol and Lynx headed to the entryway with the rest of the group.
"I wonder if this is the same apartment I saw that man going to 5 years ago... probably not... but I can't help but wonder if it is... that would be a strange coincident..." Sol said before realising he said that out loud. "What man?" Lynx asked curiously. "His name was Francis Mosses... that's all I know about him..." Sol said quietly. When they arrived at the entryway, they were given their fake documents, personalities, important things to know about the person in case someone asked, and the physical appearance they had to take on. a couple immature doppelgangers -or dopples for short- ran out the building after getting everything shouting "I understand!" or "I'll change my appearance on the way there!" The more mature doppels stuck around and got told about how if they messed up their appearance or excuse, they would die.
Sol got his identity and read it out loud to Lynx. "A divorced milkman that has a 15 year old daughter; Anastacha, who lives with her mother, Nacha." Sol winced and he read this, knowing that this kid would probably come up to him thinking he's her father. "This man is known for his shy awkward personality, kindness, and saying mmm when he can't figure out what to say or at the beginning of a sentence. Why does this man sound like me?!" "Well that just makes it easier for you doesn't it?" Lynx teased. Sol rolled his eyes and snorted. He looked at the name at the bottom of the page; Francis Mosses. Sol inhaled sharply at the sight of this, and choked on his own spit. He then started coughing. A lot.
"Holy frick! Are you ok?!" Lynx exclaimed, concerned. "Oh- hack! cough! yeah- hack hack hack! just... cough... peachy..." Sol responded, coughing violently. He took a deep breath and the coughing seemed to slow down within a few minutes. Lynx got their identity as well and couldn't seem to stop talking about it. "This is such a cool identity! I could definitely pull this off." they bragged to Sol. "What makes this identity so cool exactly?" Sol asked. "Oh not much, just the fact that this guy's a fucking pilot!!!" Lynx said excitedly. After telling Lynx to watch their language, and getting them to calm down, they listened to the briefing on the mission. "We are trying to get into different apartments to be able to let others in." The instructor explained. "Once
you get inside, you need to find your way to the doorman's office. If anyone gets in your way, eliminate them. It doesn't matter who it is." There is no way I'm doing that but I won't say anything. I can do this without killing anyone. Sol thought to himself. "Once you get to the doorman's office, kill the doorman so they don't call the D.D.D on you." the instructor continued. "Understood?" the remaining doppels nodded, shouting "Yes sir!" "Very good. Good luck out there." the instructor said and then left. The other doppels then shapeshifted into their new identities, got changed, and left. Finally, Sol and Lynx were the last ones. Sol turned to look at Lynx. He saw that they looked scared, but when Lynx turned to look at him, they forced a smile. "Are you...
ok?" Sol asked cautiously. "I'm fine Sol." Lynx said, trying to keep their voice from wavering, but sounding cold instead. "You don't need to lie to me, Lynx. You can tell me what it is." Sol said calmly. Lynx's eyes started welling up with tears and the corner of their mouth started twitching. Then they burst into tears. "My ID's wrong! The name is misspelled! What am I gonna do!? They're g-going to kill meee!" Lynx sobbed. "You can make up an excuse. Say that they messed up when putting your name on the card ok? I'll be right behind you if anything happens." Sol spoke softly, giving Lynx a big hug. "O-Ok... but... you need to promise me something." Lynx whispered. "What is it buddy?" Sol asked gently. "Promise me that if I get caught, you'll act
like you don't know me." Lynx's voice shook even more as they said this. "WHAT!? No. NO! I can't do tha-" I started to say. "PROMISE ME! PROMISE ME YOU'LL FINISH THE MISSION IF I FAIL!" Lynx yelled. "Ok... I promise." Sol said quietly. They hugged each other again. They shapeshifted into their identities, grabbed their assigned outfits, and walked out, Lynx taking the lead with Sol following close behind.
Chapter 2: The Apartment
After ten minutes or so, Sol and Lynx arrived at the apartment building. "It's time. Follow my lead." Lynx spoke calmly yet firmly as they stepped in the front door. Sol cautiously followed, taking a deep breath as he watched Lynx go up to the security window. "Good morning Steven. How was your day?" the doorman asked. "It was pretty alright. Thankfully there were no crashes today." Lynx responded. "Alright, give me a moment sir. I just need to check your documents." the doorman said calmly. Sol could tell Lynx was squeezing their eyes shut,
even with them wearing sunglasses. "Um, sir... why does the name on your ID have two t's?" the doorman asked cautiously. "Oh, they messed up on my ID... I can't change it and they said I have to wait another month to get a new one." Lynx lied, sweating profusely. "Why are you so nervous? You are telling the truth, aren't you?" The doorman asked skeptically. "O-Oh, I-I j-just... u-um..."Lynx scrambled to find an excuse, getting sweatier and sweatier. "W-Wow it sure is w-warm in h-here, heheh..." "That's what I thought, doppelganger." the doorman scowled, pressing the alarm. "No w-wait! I promise I can explain-!" Lynx tried to say to the doorman before the metal security shutters closed. They tried to run
for the exit door, only to find D.D.D Officers blocking the way. As the D.D.D officers dragged them away, they were yelling, trying to get the attention of the doorman. "Please! You're making a mistake! I'm not a dopplega-!" they screamed before the D.D.D knocked them out. One of the officers stuck around to tell the doorman they could continue their job. Sol took a few deep breaths, telling himself he could do it. I just need act like I do normally but a bit different. It won't be that hard. I need to finish this. For Lynx. He thought to himself, trying to keep tears out of his eyes. Sol took some more deep breaths, wiped his eyes, and walked up to the security window. "Good morning Francis. Where are your documents?" The doorman asked.
"Oh... my apologies, here." Sol said as calmly as he could, handing the doorman his documents. The doorman analyzed every detail of the documents. While Sol was watching, he made a few comments about how what the doorman was doing was quite impressive and that not everyone had eyesight good enough to notice a small detail like a misplaced letter. The doorman replied with a few comments about the complements such as "That's very kind of you Francis, but flattery won't stop me from doing my job" and "That's the first time anyone's said that. Thank you". They also talked a bit about the previous person that was in there. The doorman said they felt bad, but it was part of the job, and that they had to live with that awful
feeling in their stomach. Sol suddenly understood that they didn't want this job, but they had to do it. "Everything checks out." the doorman told Sol as they finished checking over the documents. "May I come in now?" Sol asked politely. "Go ahead. I'm not stopping ya." the doorman responded. Sol thanked the doorman and told them to have a good day before walking through the door. He heard the loud noise as the door shut behind him. He walked down the hallway, panicking about what he should do. I don't want to kill the doorman... I did originally but now... they were so nice... and they felt bad for sending Lynx to their demise... Hell, they probably didn't even know people sent there died... Sol thought. Then he felt really sad knowing his
best friend was probably dead. He thought about everything. From the start of their friendship, to when they walked into the apartment. He felt tears form in his eyes. He sniffed and wiped his eyes, determined to finish the mission without anyone else dying. He took a deep breath, and took a step forward. He began walking down the hall. He kept walking until he saw a girl not too far away from him and stopped. The girl turned around, a surprised look on her face. "Dad? I thought you weren't supposed to be back for an hour!" the girl said, extremely confused. "Sorry Ana... I'm not your dad..." Sol responded awkwardly. "Only Mom and Dad call me Ana so you have to be messing with me right now!" the girl said skeptically. "If you aren't my
dad, then why are you calling me Ana? Hell, why do you know my name if you aren't my dad?" "ANASTACHA MIKAELYS!" A woman with heterochromia shouted. "You shouldn't leave the apartment early! I didn't know were you were-- Francis?" Oh no... this just keeps getting worse... Sol thought, getting increasingly more nervous. He took a deep breath before said anything. "Hello, Nacha." he said calmly "How was your day?" "Can you give me a moment to speak with Anastacha?" Nacha asked politely. "Of course, take all the time you need." Sol responded, relieved he didn't have to say anything else for a bit. "You shouldn't have run off early!" Sol heard Nacha say "I didn't know where you were! You almost gave me a heart attack!" "I'm 15 Mom, I can do
what I want!" Anastacha argued, clearly offended by this. "I am your mother and I am just trying to keep you safe!" Nacha responded, voice sounding disappointed, rather than upset "You should have told me you were going downstairs so I knew where to look! I was checking every floor looking for you! I'm not angry, but please promise me you won't do that again." "Ok, Ok fine!" Ana said, irritated. "Should I just leave?" Sol asked nervously glancing from Nacha to Anastacha. "No!" Anastacha blurted out "I mean... I already don't get to see you that often..." "Alright then... I... suppose I'll just wait for you to be done your argument then." Sol said, awkwardly. "I'm sorry for yelling at you, Ana. I'm just trying to make sure you don't get hurt or in trouble. I hope
you understand." Nacha told her. "I'm sorry for yelling at you Mom. I'll try to tell you before I do something like that again." Anastacha responded. Then they hugged. Sol was going to say something, but he didn't want to interrupted their moment. All of a sudden a portal opened up and sucked Sol and Ana through. "ANA!" Nacha screamed, trying to get in the portal but it closed before she could get in. The last thing Sol saw before passing out was the swirling lights of the portal. Then, he became unconscious.
Chapter 3: A new world
When Sol woke up, his vision was blurry and his head was spinning. He ran his hands along his leg and felt a damp, warm feeling on his leg. He looked down and realized his leg was covered in his own emerald, glistening blood. wondering why only his leg was bleeding, he looked around and realized the majority of the area around him seemed to be covered in a very soft greenish plant -from what he could tell with his blurry vision, anyway. Then he realized it was like a carpet over the ground. Moss! This is moss! he realized. Then he realized something else. He wondered
wondered why he hadn't noticed it before. His leg had a few small twigs stuck in his skin in several places. "A-Ah... that... that must be why I'm b-bleeding so much..." He said to himself, wincing in pain. He looked around for Ana. When his eyes fully focused. He saw that she was starting to get up. He noticed her arms and legs had been scratched by tree branches on the way down, and that the scratches were very big. Then he realized that she was crying. He didn't like seeing people in pain, but he also wanted to find a doctor for both of them, before their wounds got infected. He didn't have the energy left in him to yell, so he figured he'd have to get her attention another way. Unfortunately, that meant he had to stand up. He held onto a nearby rock
and propped himself up. As soon as he let go of the rock, his leg buckled under the weight and he fell back down onto the carpet of moss. Thankfully Anastacha noticed that he fell down and came to help. "Dad are you oka--" she started to say before looking at his leg, covered in bright green blood "Oh, you were telling the truth... you're not my dad... But... hmm... whatever! You can tell me when we get help!" Anastacha put Sol's arm over her shoulder and staggered towards lights in the distance. "W-Where are we going?" Sol asked quietly. "Lights mean civilization! It doesn't matter if they don't know how to do medical procedures on dopples, It's our best bet." Anastacha responded confidently. "Well... I don't have enough energy
to argue with you and it is the closest civilization..." Sol wheezed, his head still pounding. "We're in agreement then." Anastacha said calmly. Neither of them spoke for the rest of the walk through the forest. By the time they reached the edge of the forest, it was night time and they were both tired. "We... need... to keep... moving..." Sol said stifling a yawn. Anastacha nodded in agreement. Then they both passed out on the spot. Sol woke up a few hours later. looking around the area, he realized he wasn't in the forest anymore; he was in someone's house. He felt something wrapped around his leg and looked down. His leg was wrapped in gauze. He looked around the room for Anastacha... and saw she was in a bed parallel to his about
2 feet away. He sat upright and was about to get off the bed-- "Please don't do that." a voice said "Your leg isn't fully healed yet." Sol looked around the room. "Who's there? Show yourself!" he said trying to keep his voice from sounding panicked. "Calm down, if I wanted to kill you, I would've done it already." a figure said as they stepped out of the shadows. "Also, if you wanted to know who I was, you could've just asked politely." the figure chuckled after that sentence. "I'm sorry, i'm just a bit on edge after what happened." Sol responded groggily. "If I had bad injuries and passed out in a forest, I'd be pretty upset too." the person -now fully out of the shadows- said, smiling warmly "As for my name... Just call me John Doe actually maybe
