Apanie is a young Cree girl who lives on the outskirt 

of a prairie village in Northern Manitoba. Apanie 

loves to garden. She grew up learning the ways of 

the Cree people from her grandmother named 

Iterika because of her beautiful green eyes. 

Apanie’s grandmother was her sole teacher and she 

learned everything Apanie loved her people, they 

were her family, they were her world. The Cree 

village had a berry field that had become the border 

of the Cree territory and the Prairie village. There 

were no fence that separated the two villages, just 

an understanding from the Cree Clan leader 

Kukoum Nataka and Mr. Jones the general store 

owner who was the wealthiest man in the prairie 

village. This agreement was struck by the two men 

20 years ago before Apanie was even born. 

One day while picking berries in the fields 

Apanie came across a girl with a beautiful 

husky dog. The girl’s name was Susie. 

Susie was the daughter of Mr. Jones the 

general store owner. Apanie and Susie 

became friends instantly. They did not 

speak the same language therefore they 

used gestures to communicate to each 

other. From this day forward they became 

inseparable and would meet at the same 

time every day in the berry fields. 

Apanie decided she wanted to attend school in 

the prairie town near her village. Susie 

encouraged Apanie to talk to her clan to see if 

they would allow her to come to the village to 

go to school and learn English. Susie was 

excited as her mother is the village teacher and 

they would be attending school together. Susie 

convinced Apanie to come to the general store 

with her so that she can meet her mom the 

teacher of the prairie village.
