Henry's Choice
By Ananya Iyer
and Caitlyn Forte

I'm starving! Better get some breakfast.

It was morning. Henry had just
woken feeling hungry. He decided
to go downstairs and get some
breakfast.

Good morning Henry! What would you like
for breakfast?

Henry went downstairs to get
some breakfast. He saw his mom
and said good morning. Then
Henry decided what he wanted to
eat.

Should Henry have a donut and chocolate milk
for breakfast...

...Or should he have toast, eggs, and a glass of 100%
orange juice?
One carton of chocolate milk has
5 grams of fats, 34
grams of
Carbohydrates, 7
grams of protein,
10 % Vitamin A,
and has 190
calories30 grams of
Carbohydrates.

minerals, and 210

and 120
Calories.
...Or B.

Fats
When Henry ate the donut his body had too much fat.
Regular fat, saturated fat, and unsaturated fat. These fats
are found in many foods and are made up of glycerol and
fatty acids. Although some fat is needed in your cells, too
much of it can result in the clogging of arteries. The added
fat will also add to Henry's weight. He will get more
chubby and this can result in elevated cholesterol levels.
High levels of cholesterol will cause atherosclerosis, the
hardening of the arteries. The hardening and clogging of
the arteries won't end very well for poor Henry.

Carbohydrates
When Henry had the toast he had lots of
carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are made up
of a chain of sugar and gave him lots of
energy. Carbohydrates are one of the four
major macromolecules that make up the
biological system. The toast Henry ate was an
example of complex carbohydrates. Complex
Carbohydrates take longer to digest. Starches
are also complex carbohydrates. The toast has
grains in it making it a starch. The doughnut has
lots of carbohydrates too, but it contains too much
sugar and fat, which is bad for health. Containing
so much sugar, the doughnut proves to be an
example of simple carbohydrates. Simple
carbohydrates are digested very quickly.

Protein
Proteins are another nutrient that was in Henry's
breakfast. Proteins one of the macromolecules or
essential building blocks of the biological system.
Proteins are made up of a chain of amino acids. There
are essential amino acids as well. Proteins form bones
and muscles in your body and can be found in eggs
and nuts. Henry's bones will get stronger if he eats the
eggs, toast and orange juice. But if he eats the
doughnut and chocolate milk he wont get enough
protein.

Vitamins and Minerals
The last important nutrients in Henry's breakfast are
the vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals are
nutrients that help control body processes. An
example of a vitamin is vitamin C, found in oranges
and orange juice. An example of a mineral is
potassium, found in bananas. Vitamins and minerals
are all different and are made up of different things.
When Henry drank his orange juice, he got lots of
Vitamin C to prevent colds. But when Henry drank the
chocolate milk, all he got was a bunch of sugar and not
enough nutrients.

I love this book!
After eating breakfast,Henry went
up to his room and decided to read
his favorite book about eating
healthy.

Henry! Come eatlunch before karate
class!

Having read the book from cover
to cover, Henry got ready for
karate class. Then he went
downstairs to eat lunch before
karate practice.

What would you like for lunch
Henry?

Henry went downstairs to eat
lunch. His mother greeted him and
asked him what he would like to
eat.
Henry needs to have something
that will give him the right
nutrients to perform well at karate
class.
Should Henry have a hamburger, fries, and coke for lunch...

... Or should he have grilledchicken, salad, and a glass of milk?

Hamburger:52 grams of Carbohydrates
45 grams of fat: 15 grams
saturated. 39 grams of
protein. No vitamins
or minerals. 750 calories.
Choose A...
3.4 grams of Carbohydrates,7.6 grams of Fat, 50 grams of Protein, 14% of
Vitamin A, 48% of Vitamin C, 3% of
Calcium,10% of Iron, and 295 Calories13 grams of
Carbohydrates,
2.5 grams of Fat:
1.5 grams of
Saturated Fat, 10
grams of Protein,
10% of Vitamin A,
35% Calcium, and
120 Calories
...Or B.

Eating the hamburger and fries topped with a soda can suffice
for Henry. This meal will provide Henry with Carbohydrates to
give him quick energy. Carbohydrates are one of the four
macromolecules that build the biological system. From the
sugar in the soda Henry will get simple carbohydrates,
carbohydrates that are broken down and digested very quickly.
By eating the hamburger bun Henry will get complex
carbohydrates from the whole grains in the bread. Complex
carbohydrates are harder to digest. Carbohydrates are good for
your body, they help you store energy for quick use. However
Henry will get too many carbohydrates from the sugar in his
soda resulting in a quick burst of energy. This energy will run
out before he gets to karate practice causing Henry to run low on
energy.
Not only this, but the hamburger is inorganic. This means that
the meat is processed, processed meat can include chemical
enhancers that are unhealthy for Henry to eat. The chemicals in
the processed meat of the inorganic burger will cause Henry to
eat unhealthily because chemicals are bad for the body.

Eating the chicken will give Henry lots of protein to build up his muscles
and strengthen him in karate class. Drinking the milk with his chicken will
give Henry the mineral calcium. Calcium will help to keep Henry's blood
flow steady.
The chicken contains a healthy amount of fat, which is good for the cells in
Henry's body. The fat in the chicken has lipids in it. Lipids are another of
the four macromolecules needed in the biological system. The lipids in
Henry's chicken help store energy long term. This means that from eating
the chicken Henry can store energy and use it later during karate class.
The lettuce in Henry's salad contains fiber. Fiber helps to clean the digestive
system and push all the waste out. The salad is also organic. This means
that there are no artificial preservatives in the salad to make it unhealthy.
