Madame Emerald had a problem. She was a
nutrient moving into the health neighborhood,
but she had amnesia and could not remember
who she was. She had no idea what kind of
nutrient she was! Was she a protein? A
vitamin? It was all so confusing! She decided
to ask a friendly tour guide for help.

"Welcome to the Health Neighborhood! I'm a
carbohydrate, but you can call me Sir Carb. Here in
the Health Neighborhood, we're very diverse. We have
all sorts of nutrients here! What kind of Nutrient are
you?" asked the smiling carbohydrate.
"My name is Madame Emerald! I am very excited to
move into the Health Neighborhood, but I'm afraid
that I have no idea where I fit in! Will you help me
discover what kind of nutrient I am?" begged Madame
Emerald.
"Of course I will!" answered Sir Carb. "Let's visit the
vitamins first!"

Madame Emerald and Sir Carb walked toward the
row of houses.
"Here in the milk, bread, apple, and carrot houses
are where the vitamins live. Vitamins are very
important to our person. They help him have
chemical reactions in his body. There are different
types of vitamins like vitamin A, B,C, D, and more!
Some of our vitamins are organic, meaning they
contain carbon, and some aren't," Sir Carb told
Madame Emerald.
"I don't think I'm a vitamin," she replied sadly.

"Carbohydrates also live with the vitamins in the bread,
apple, and carrot!" Sir Carb told Madame Emerald. "Us
carbs store energy in our person's body and help him do
the things he needs to do everyday! We are classified as
simple and complex, and release about 4 calories of
energy per gram. We are organic because we contain
carbon. Do you see those blocks over there? They are
starch, cellulose, and glycogen. They are the types of
building blocks we are made up of." "Hmm," said
Madame Emerald, "doesn't sound like me."
A happy baby nutrient bounded out of the bread house.
"This is my daughter Carbiola," Sir Carb told her. "She is
a complex carbohydrate. They are things like vegetables
and starches. I, however, am a simple carbohydrate.
Simple carbohydrates are found in glucose and fruits."
"We live in the bread house!" Carbiola told Madame
Emerald happily. Madame Emerald sighed. How she
wished she could fit in!

Carbiola ran back into the house and Sir Carb and
Madame Emerald continued on their tour of the Health
Neighborhood. "Here in the nuts, meats, and beans is
where the proteins live!" Sir Carb showed Madame
Emerald. "Proteins not only store energy, but also help
our person complete life giving functions! Proteins are
organic and release 4 calories per gram and use amino
acids for the building blocks of their houses. Oh look,
here comes Enzyme! He helps speed up chemical
reactions in living things. He's made up of
amino acids!"
"Definitely not me," decided
Madame Emerald.

Olive Oil

The two nutrients continued on their journey.
"The lipids live here beside our most important
nutrient-water!" Sir Carb explained."About
60% of our person is water! Water helps carry
nutrients and waste products, maintains body
temperature, and helps with digestion! Water
is one of our only inorganic nutrients." "I see,"
said Madame Emerald. "I don't think I could
ever do all that!" "Hmm- maybe not," agreed
Sir Carb.

Olive Oil

"Here are the lipids-saturated and unsaturated
fats," said Sir Carb. "The unsaturated fats are
liquid, like this olive oil, and the saturated fats are
solids, like these french fries. Lipids help store
large amounts of energy in our person's body," he
continued. "They release about 9 calories of energy
per gram. Because they contain carbon, they are
organic. They built their houses out of building
blocks called fatty acids."
"I am not fat!" said Madame Emerald decisively.
"Alright then, onward to the minerals!" replied Sir
Carb.
