Kimmy Learns About the SensesBy: Emily Weekley

Chapter 1:Kimmy Learns about Sight

Kimmy and her daddy are on their way
to the eye doctor's office. Kimmy is
actually excited! She wants to learn all
about her eyes.
"Daddy, what do your eyes do?" she
asks.
"Your eyes help you see everything
around you." her daddy replies.
"We're here! We're here!" Kimmy
shouts.

Once inside the
office, Kimmy's
daddy goes and
signs her in. After
a few minutes the
nurse comes in
and calls her
name.

While Kimmy was in the exam
room she asked the doctor all
about sight. He told her, "The
eyes are the part of the body
that lets you see your daddy.
The eyes work by allowing
light to enter the pupil. The
colored part of your eye ,or
the iris, changes the size of
the pupil, the lens makes the
light focus on the back of the
eye, and the retina changes
the light into the image that
you see. Does that make
sense?" he asked.
"Yes! Thanks sooo much."

"Aren't there sicknesses of the eyes?" asked Kimmy.
"Why yes there are." said the Doctor. "Glaucoma, which is a group of
diseases that leads to damage to the nerve in the eye that helps us see.
Another disease is myopia. Myopia is where you can see things up close but
can't see them far away. Astigmatism is a disorder of the eye where the front
of the eye is abnormally curved. Presbyopia is where you cannot see things
up close, but you can see things far away. Cataract is where there is a
cloudiness in the lens. Another common disease is conjunctivitis which is an
swelling of the eye. It is also called pink eye. These are the most common
eye diseases.

"Thank you Doctor! I hope she didn't ask too many question."
said Kimmy's Daddy.
"No she was no bother." said the Doctor.
Chapter 2: Kimmy learns about hearing

"Mommy what helps us hear things?" asked Kimmy.
"Our ears help us hear all the noises that we hear." replied her
mom.
"How?" questioned Kimmy.
"Sound goes through the ear canal and vibrates against the
eardrum. That's what causes us to hear." said her mommy.
"Can i see a picture of an ear?" asked Kimmy.
"Sure" said her mom.

"My eye doctor told me about some diseases that happen to the eye. Are
there any that happen to the ears?" asked Kimmy.
"Yes there are four major diseases Otitis, Meniere’s Disease, Otosclerosis,
Presbycusis. Otitis is an infection of the ear. Meniere's Disease is a disease
that causes random episodes
of vertigo, which is a spinning motion. Otosclerosis is abnormal bone growth
in the ear. This can cause you to stop hearing. Presbycusis is hearing lose
that happens when you get older. These are the disease that i deal wit
everyday." said her mommy.
"Thanks Mommy!! I just love learing about senses! Maybe ill become a
doctor like you!!" said Kimmy.
