The River That Talks

In the beautiful land where the long Cagayan River flows, there lived a little Ibanag girl named Iya. Every day, Iya would sit by the river and talk to it. She believed the river could hear her, even if it didn’t talk back.

But one sunny day, something amazing happened! The river whispered back! "Iya, Iya," the voice said. "I have a secret just for you. Do you want to know what it is?"

Ask the reader, "If the river could talk to you, what secret would you want it to tell? Whisper it to the river!

The Magic Shell

The voice told Iya to find a special, shiny shell hidden somewhere along the riverbank. “This shell will help you on your adventure,” the river said. Iya was so excited that she jumped up and started looking for it right away.

She searched high and low, under rocks, and between the roots of big trees. Finally, she found it—a beautiful shell that sparkled in the sunlight!

Challenge the reader, "Pretend you’re searching for the magic shell with Inna! Where would you look?"

The Shell’s Secret Power

When Iya held the shell close to her ear, she could hear the river’s voice again! "This shell will guide you. Follow where it points, and you’ll discover my secret."

Iya noticed that the shell would glow a little brighter whenever she faced the right direction. With the shell in hand, she set off on her adventure, eager to uncover the river's secret.

Invite the reader to pretend they’re holding the magic shell. “Which way is it pointing? Let’s follow it together!”

The Friendly Turtle

As Iya followed the shell’s glow, she reached a part of the river she had never seen before. Suddenly, a large, friendly turtle popped its head out of the water. “Hello, little one,” said the turtle. “Are you looking for something special?”

“Yes!” Iya replied. “The river told me to find its secret.”

The turtle nodded wisely. “Keep going, but remember—sometimes the greatest secrets are the ones that are shared.”

Ask the reader, “If you could talk to a turtle, what would you ask it? Would you share your secret with the turtle?”
