To my dear son, Elijah,
This book is for you. As you grow and explore the world, I hope you carry with you the lessons of kindness, respect, and understanding. Just like the river in this story, our actions and the way we treat others have the power to bring light and magic into the world. Always remember that by treating others with love and care, you help make the world a brighter and more beautiful place.
With all my love,
Mom

The Village and the Family
The sun rises over a vibrant village in the Dominican Republic. Brightly painted houses with red-tiled roofs line the dirt roads, and the scent of freshly baked bread fills the air. Birds sing in the palm trees that sway gently in the warm breeze. In the distance, the river sparkles like a ribbon of silver, winding its way through the village.
María, a kind and hardworking mother, stands in the kitchen of her small but cozy home. The walls are painted a cheerful yellow, and the aroma of breakfast—tostones and mangú—fills the room.
“Kids, come have breakfast! We have a long day ahead,” María calls out, her voice warm but firm.
Ana, the responsible 12-year-old, enters first, always eager to help her mother. Luis, 10, follows with curious eyes that lead him to new adventures. Carla, 8, bounces in, her imagination sparking her cheerful smile. Last is Diego, the 6-year-old whose endless energy fills the house with laughter.
“Okay, Mom,” Ana replies. “Can we go to the river after we finish our chores?”
María smiles, knowing how much the children love playing by the river. “Yes, but only after everything is clean.”

The River's Magic
After finishing their chores, the children race down to the riverbank. The clear water glistens in the sunlight, and they can see the colorful fish swimming just below the surface. The river is their favorite place to play, a magical spot where they can let their imaginations run wild.
Luis kneels by the water’s edge, his eyes wide with wonder. “Look how the river sparkles today. It’s like it’s alive!”
Carla, “Grandma always says the river reflects how we treat each other.”
The children spend hours by the river, splashing in the water, skipping stones, and playing their favorite games. The sunlight dances on the water's surface, creating a shimmering effect that makes the river seem alive, just as Luis said.
The Disagreement
As the day goes on, the children decide to play a game of catch. Ana throws the ball to Luis, who catches it with ease. But when it’s Carla’s turn, Luis grabs the ball first, not wanting to wait.
“Luis, it’s not fair that you always want to take the ball first!” Ana scolds, her hands on her hips.
Luis frowns, not understanding why Ana is upset. “But I grabbed it first! It’s not my fault!”
Carla, who just wants everyone to get along, tries to calm them down. “Stop fighting! We’re ruining the game.”
Diego, who has been watching quietly, notices something strange. “Look, the river isn’t sparkling as much now.”
The children look at the river and see that the sparkle is fading, the water now looking dull and murky. The magic they felt earlier seems to have disappeared, just like the light in the water.
The Village Meeting
Word spreads quickly through the village about the river’s change. Concerned, the villagers gather in the square to discuss what could be causing the river to lose its sparkle.
“Have you all noticed the river has changed?” asks an elderly man, his voice filled with worry.
“Yes, and it seems to have happened since we’ve been arguing more,” a woman replies, nodding in agreement.
The villagers exchange worried glances. The river has always been a symbol of their community’s well-being. If the river is sick, does that mean something is wrong with them too?
