Once upon a time, there was a cute wooden house surrounded by
trees. Everywhere you looked,
and as far as you could see, there
were trees.

Dad, Mom, Mary, Laura, and Carrielived in that cute wooden house in
the woods. They also had a dog
named Jack.

Since the house was in the woods,there were wild animals. One night
Dad woke Laura up to look out of
the window. Out the window,
were two wolves howling at the
yellow moon.

Dad had to hunt in the woods so the family could eat. They put the meat in
a hollow log with nails to hang the
meat on. Then they would make
a fire on the bottom to smoke the
meat so they could eat it throughout
the winter. Smoke would come out
of the roof and door while the fire
was burning.

In the fall, Dad would put the pig in abig wooden pen so it would get fat.
One day Laura heard the pig
squealing. Dad went out with his gun.
Mary and Laura heard two shots.
Dad came back inside and said that
a bear was trying to get the pig! He
didn't shoot it though; he only scared
it away.

Mom would keep all of her vegetables in the attic. She would
prepare all of them so that they could
have garden veggies all year. They
had to grow all of their veggies.
There were lots of different veggies
in the attic.

At night Laura's dad would play hisfiddle for the family. Most nights
dad would also tell the girls a story.
The girls would gather at his feet
and listen to the enchanting
stories.

In the winter when the girls wouldwake up, they would look on the
windows and see the pictures that
Jack Frost would draw for them. He
drew trees, flowers, and fairies.
Laura and Mary would use Mom's
Thimble and draw their own
pictures, but never ruin Jack's.

Laura and Mary had to help their momand dad with the chores around the
house. When it was time, they helped
churn the butter, or make cheese. Laura
and Mary liked to help make the cheese
and butter, but making butter was too
hard for Laura because she was too
small.

When Mom would make butter, she would use a press that was shaped like
a strawberry with two leaves. Laura
loved to look at the butter once it was
pressed. She liked to eat the butter too.

One story that Dad told Mary and Laurawas the story about their grandpa and a
panther. He was in the woods at night
and there was a panther chasing him.
When he got to his house, he ran as
fast as he could and the panther got his
horse. Then their grandpa throw some-
thing at the panther and saved the horse.
The panther would have gotten grandpa
if he would have been on the horse.

Sometimes Laura's family comes over to visit. Uncle Peter, Aunt Eliza, and her
cousins Pete, Ella, and Alice. They
would play games all day and laugh.
Laura loved when her cousins would
come over to play.

Mary had a rag doll and Laura reallywanted one, but she was too little. At
Christmas, she got a rag doll of her own
from Santa. Laura was so excited that
she wouldn't let anyone else hold her.
Laura named the doll Charlotte.

Laura's birthday was right afterChristmas. Since she was turning five
years old, Mom made her five cakes and
a dress for Charlotte. She got six
spankings from Dad; five for the years
she had been with Mom and Dad, and
one for growing through the year.

Dad had to go to town one day. He leftearly in the morning and didn't get back
until late at night. While he was gone,
Mom had to go put Suky, their cow,
into the barn. She took Laura with her
to hold the lamp for her. But Suky was
already in the barn, and a bear was in
the fence! Mom didn't know it was a
bear and she touched it. Then she saw it
was a bear and ran into the house.
