Ana G. Méndez

(1908 - 1997)

This story fulfilled with dreams begins a few years ago, specifically over 100 years ago. January 17, 1908 Ana González de Méndez was born in Aguada Puerto Rico. She is the daughter of Francisco González Monge and Ana Cofresí, she also had 8 brothers. Ana was born with a passion for education, that led her to obtain a bachelor's degree in business education from the University of Puerto Rico in 1940 and then to continue her studies at New York University, where she obtained a master's degree in 1948. Ana's career in education began to take shape in 1941, when she co-founded the Puerto Rico High School of Commerce, marking the beginning of a career dedicated to improving educational opportunities for the youth of the Island. This was just the beginning to her successful career.

Puerto Rico Junior College

With her admirable creativity, with two other educators by her side, Mr. Alfredo Muñiz Souffront and Florencio Pagán Cruz, they have founded the Puerto Rico Junior College (PRJC) in Río Piedras, San Juan on Puerto Rico, with only 19 students in 1949. The Puerto Rico Junior College was the first higher education institution on the island to offer only short two-year courses, offering university studies to young people who aspired to complete a degree in a short time. Being the huge visionary she is, a few years later on the beginnings of the 1970's she has founded something that not only changed the education around Puerto Rico, but marked her legacy.

In 1972, she has reached new heights by founding the Turabo University College on Gurabo, Puerto Rico, known as Ana G. Méndez University, Gurabo Campus now on this day. She chaired the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Junior College Foundation, from 1952 to 1972. In 1973 she resigned as president of the foundation and for this reason it was renamed to the "Educative Foundation of Ana G. Méndez", chaired by her grandson José F. Méndez Méndez.

By the year 2019 in celebration of the 70th anniversary, the institutions of the Ana G. Méndez University System change their name to Ana G. Méndez University. Throughout her life, she received countless distinctions, the product of her hard civic and educational work; but her work is the best evidence as a hard working woman of her life. Today the university that bears her name is the first private higher education institution in Puerto Rico with an enrollment of over 35 thousand students.

Ana G. Méndez passed away in 1997, leaving behind a successful legacy of dedication and innovation in education. Her visionary work laid the foundation for what is now the University Ana G. Méndez (UAGM), the largest private institution of higher education in Puerto Rico. Her contributions continue to inspire and impact thousands of students and educators, ensuring that her commitment to accessible and quality education lives on.
