Tofurkey ThanksgivingBy Davianne Croasmun

"Boys and girls gather around." said Mrs. Militish
"I have a special announcement. Next week is Thanksgiving .
We have learned about the pilgrims first Thanksgiving feast
ao we will have on of our very own."

The class began to clap and cheer .
"We will have a turkey with all the
fixings" Nate heard that and felt uncomfortable.
Mrs. Militish noticed Nate's look on his face.

"What's wrong, Nate?" asked Mrs. Militish
"My parents said it is wrong to eat meat. I
don't know what to do next week." said Nate
"Well, talk it over with your parents and maybe
we can work something out, okay?"
"Okay, I guess" Nate sighed.

Nate went home and explained what was
happening at school to his parents.
Nate's mom looked puzzled for a second
then she had a big smile on her face.
"What's that look for, Mommy?" Nate asked.
"That's her thinking face" Nate's dad said.

"I've got a great idea, Nate.
We will go explain to your class
why we don't eat meat and that it
is okay if they do." Nate's mom
explained.
"But, Mommy?" Nate puzzledly asked.
"Yes, Nate?" she replied.
"Why don't we eat turkey or hotdogs?"

Nate's mom scooped him up unto
her lap and sat down on the couch.
"Well you see Nate, before you were
born your Daddy and I were eating
so many hamburgers and hotdogs it
was unhealthy. The doctor told us
needed to eat better so we did away
with meat all together."

"Oh, I see" Nate said.
"The doctor said we could still eat
some meat just not too much so it is
not wrong of your class to eat meat"
she explained.
Nate looked curious.
"We also want to be friendly to the
animals. So many of them get eaten,
we wanted to save a few."

"Well that was very nice of you" Nate added
Nate thought for a second and then asked
"Wait a second, Mommy. If we aren't eating
turkey, then what are we eating?"
"We will eat tofurkey for thanksgiving!" Nate's
dad said.
"Oh, sounds cool. I'm excited for it!"

The next week Nate's parents came into
class and explained all about what a vegetarian,
or a person who doesn't eat meat, does. All the
students were fascinated by it. Though one girl
shouted out she will always love chicken nuggets.

After that Mrs. Militish announced that Nate's
parents had a very special surprise. Then out they
came with some tofurkey for everyone. The class
laughed and enjoyed their vegetarian and regular
Thanksgiving feasts.
