GREECE

Greece is a country in southeastern Europe and is located at the southernmost point of the Balkan peninsula. It borders Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey as well. Athens is its capital. It is a mountainous country, which is also characterized by the large number of islands it has, which are about 2,500. The historical heritage of Greece is quite rich, a fact that is reflected in the 19 UNESCO World Heritage Sites which are located on its territory. The most well-known of them is the Acropolis of Athens. Furthermore, Greece constitutes the birthplace of the democratic state, the Olympic Games, as well as theatrical genres such as ancient drama, comedy and tragedy.

Lesvos Island is a beautiful place in Greece known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and friendly people. It’s the third largest island in Greece, located in the Aegean Sea. Lesvos is famous for its olive trees, which produce delicious olive oil, and it has many beautiful beaches where you can play and relax. In the town of Mytilene, you can see an ancient castle that tells stories of the island’s past.Lesvos is also home to many animals and plants. The people of Lesvos are known for their hospitality. Visiting Lesvos is a great way to learn about Greek culture and enjoy nature. Whether you’re swimming in the sea, exploring ancient ruins, or tasting local treats, there’s always something fun to do on this special island! 

    Our school is located in the beautiful Mithymna, a traditional and picturesque village in the northeast of the island of Lesvos, with a population of 1,335. The impressive castle stands at the highest point of the village, built on a hill, while the small harbor offers an endless view of the Aegean Sea, adorned with boats of various sizes. The houses are constructed from stone and wood, with tiled roofs that match perfectly with the deep blue of the sea. The cobbled streets and the traditional mansions, make the village an open-air museum of architectural art, while the grapevines and bougainvillea adorn the narrow paths, creating scenes of incredible beauty. Our village, in addition to being a summer tourist destination, remains active in winter, as the residents are engaged in fishing and olive cultivation. Our school sits at the village entrance, also built from stone, wood, and tiles, with the entire settlement sprawling behind it. It has a large courtyard filled with voices, games, laughs, and joy during breaks. Approaching our village, it is impossible for anyone not to utter at least one exclamation of surprise and admiration, as its beauty can steal the heart of even the most demanding visitor.

Our school is located at the entrance of our village. It began to be built in 1932 by local volunteers and was completed in 1959. That was the first year it operated as a school. It is built of stones coming from the castle of Mithymna. It has always been a multicultural school as people from different parts of the world have always lived in our village. Perhaps for this reason, the teachers of this school were usually interested in culture, art and education.

I’m extremely happy that this year we will all be sharing a journey within our feelings and emotions and through that our students will acquire knowledge and experiences which will hopefully guide them to become the very best versions of their selves!

Hello! I'm miss Maria!

My name is Maria Galli. I was born in Athens on 27-12-1977. I have been working as a primary school teacher since 2002, four years in a private school in Athens and then in public schools. Since 2008, I have been living in Molyvos, Lesvos, where I work at the village’s primary school. This year I am the second grade teacher and I have 8 students, 5 boys and 3 girls. They are very good children but I am sad that I don’t have time to play with them or spend more time with free, fun activities because of the amount of schoolwork.

Hello! I'm miss Athina!

My name is Athina Giannakou and I was born in 1992 in Thessaloniki. Since 2019, I have worked in various schools throughout Greece, specifically in Samos, Crete, Thessaloniki and Lesvos. For the last two years I have been working at the primary school of Mithymna. This year I am the 3d grade teacher and I have 14 students, 5 boys and 9 girls. As a primary school teacher, I try daily to create an inspiring, supportive and engaging learning environment for my students. I believe in cultivating curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking through lessons that not only meet academic goals but also promote social-emotional growth. My main aim is to ensure every child in my classroom feels valued and confident in their abilities. Outside of the classroom, I am passionate about reading books, watching movies, exploring the nature and food of Lesvos island and travelling.

Hello! I'm miss Vasiliki!

My name is Vasiliki Chavoutsioti. I was born in Mithymna in 1976. I have been working as a teacher since 2000 at different schools in Central Greece.  Since 2012 I am a teacher at the school I attended as a student. This year I am a fourth grade teacher and I have 17 students, 7 boys and 10 girls. My students are various and interesting personalities. This year I decided to try work on an ETwinning program, because I believe it is important to open our minds to new ways of education.

Hello! I'm miss Eugenia!

   My name is Eugenia Psaradelli and I come from Lesvos island. I am 33 years old and I have been working in public education for the past 6 years. For all these years, I have been mainly teaching in small schools in villages of Lesvos and in Athens as well. This year, I am teaching at the Primary School of Mithimna in Lesvos, where I am the teacher of the 5th grade, which consists of 10 cheerful students, who are fond of learning, 6 boys and 4 girls. In our class, students are encouraged to express their feelings, positive and negative, while one of my main goals is to cultivate empathy. Furthermore, students have good relationships with each other and know each other quite well.

Hello! I'm miss Niki!

My name is Nikoletta Symeonidou, but my friends call me Niki. I am 33 years old, born and raised in Komotini, a small town in North Greece. I have been working in the education field since 2019. So far, I have worked in elementary schools in Athens, Corfu, Rodopi, and Lesvos. This year, I am teaching at the Primary School of Mithimna in Lesvos, where I am the teacher of the sixth grade. My class consists of only six students: one girl and five boys. On a daily basis, my primary focus is on the effective management of my classroom on all levels, providing motivation, experiential learning, and creating a positive atmosphere where my students can express their feelings and needs, develop their talents, while simultaneously acquiring new knowledge and information.
