Gori Fortress
The Gori Fortress, in its current form, was created around 1774, when the King of Kartli and Kakheti, Erekle II, rebuilt it based on sketches from the previous century, drawn up by the Italian missionary Cristoforo Castelli of Teramo, who lived in Gori for a time.
The structure is surrounded by an oval-shaped wall made of a mixture of cobblestones and hewn stones, the height of which reaches 10 meters. One side of the wall runs down the entire hill. Once a tunnel ran through these walls and connected to a river that flowed below the hill (it has long since receded) to provide the garrison with fresh water.
Admission to the Gori Fortress is free and visitors are allowed to climb (the restored side) around the walls and explore at their leisure. It's worth the climb for the views if nothing else - the most breathtaking sights of Gori are from the top of the citadel.
